This is insane, even for him. “Veterans Day” was originally called “Armistice Day” before war-mongering politicians got a hold of it. The people who actually fought World War One knew the truth. There were no victors in that war. And there weren’t even veterans worth holding up as national idols. The bravest never made it home. That war was a grinding attritional Hell on Earth. The veterans coming home were not victorious heroes, fresh from the triumphal capture of an enemy nation’s capital. They were shell-shocked survivors, the ones who just happened to be lucky enough to still be alive when the buzzer rang and the war ended. And it ended not from triumphal victory, but from politicians suing for peace. An action they only took when they felt that if they didn’t, their people would end up eating them alive. They pushed their populaces to the absolute brink of collapse, all for nothing. No grand victories. Nothing to make the immense loss of life possibly seem worth it. No, in immediate aftermath of that war? There was only one thing really worth celebrating - the fact that it was over. That is why it was originally called Armistice Day.
But “Victory Day.” That is a disgrace to everyone who fought and died in that war. There were no victors in that war. One side nominally won when the other’s resources ran out first. But the immense cost in suffering, lives, national wealth? None of the combatants left that war in a better state than they entered it. Everyone lost in WW1.
Trump or one of his minions reads ‘Dulce Decorum Est’ as an unironically pro-war pro-America thing
Dulce Decorum Est
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.Weren’t America barely involved in WW1? What is he even talking about? They were something like 2% of the total deaths, only joining a year before the war ended. 116k deaths. For reference, over 880k British troops died, and Britains population was under half that of America’s.
… just looking it up some more, of the 116k American troop deaths, 64k died from diseases and other non battle related incidents…
Also why is the photographers name Anna Moneymaker
Weren’t America barely involved in WW1? What is he even talking about?
wdym, the USA has been the heroic savior for every war it has ever fought in, according to itself
Anna Moneymaker sounds like a fake name that a Japanese game would give to an American
Her last name has never been revealed, but I’m certain this is it.
and WW1 was the first war in which mass casualties came from combat more than disease…but we entered at the perfect time to ship thousands of men across the sea with the fucking plague. They had to dump bodies off at sea constantly
Maybe she’s related to the guy that makes finding bigfoot
Does anyone have a reason why this administration wouldn’t want to highlight the victory in WWII as well? It almost seems intentionally left off here, but I can’t come up with any good reasons for why that would happen.
Same truth social post declaring this also declared may 8th as “victory in ww2” day
What do we call forgetting about the entire pacific war? The one the US was actually the major player in winning? Is it just racism? Not chauvinism, surely.
I’ve had people tell me I’m not giving Trump enough credit before, but this might be the first time I’ve felt forced to concede they’re right.
November 11th is the day the armistice was signed that ended WW1.
I thought WWI veterans were suckers and losers according to him? lmao.
A pointless war that
onlymostly made the world a worse place, and the US entered it near the end to make money. There’s a reason nobody celebrates the glory of it.Fuck Veterans’ Day though
It helped the USSR become a thing. That’s probably the one good thing that resulted from it.
And enabled Irish Independence, however incomplete.
fascism with hating the troops characteristics
Why not just add November 11th as a new holiday?
And let workers have another day off in the year?
I love how much he hates veterans
Also calling it victory day will make russiagate libs meltdown
It’s not just veterans he hates, no one hates Trump supporters more than Trump does lol
nah they have no idea about victory day
I love how much he hates veterans
Why? I’m not yanki, out of the loop. Anyway, I hope one of them snaps and [redacted].
Being a con man hinself he has no respect for rubes
I think it all has to do with his hate of senator John McCain mostly because he was a critic of him during his first presidency
So McCain image was being a war hero, veteran, that suffer torture, etc. So Trump started making anti-veteran comments and we eventually gets here
Anyway, I hope one of them snaps and [redacted].
Me too
“i dont like soldiers that are captured or dead”-trump
We should celebrate with WW1-inspired activities and foods!
pass the mustard (gas) please
Kohlrabi and dubious canned goulash?
Boiling my hardtack and bully beef as we speak.
Turnip winter!
WW1 was fought over who should win WW1 and America did it
Make World War 1 Great Again
This has to be satire.
I legit thought it was a /c/fakenews post at first
That’s a mouthful, it’ll never catch on
“Victory Day for WWI” doesn’t even feel correct for the title of a day. “WWI Victory Day” is what you’d expect?
Did they chat gpt a suggestion for a new national holiday and just ran with the name it spat out?
HOW DARE YOU.
IT COULD BE NICKNAMED “VD WWI” AND THE NEXT WAR COULD BE “VD W—” On second thought - never mind.
Then due to a sound change /v/ → /d͡ʒ/, it’ll be called the JD war
No, it would be GD war
Really rolls off the tongue.
Sounds like he’s declaring a victory for the war itself
