In my admittedly linited experience there are two kinds of rice booze:

“Oh this is kind of nice”
    And
    “Is this my divine punishment?”

Have thankfully never tried the latter. Soju goes down like water for me…I don’t understand comments about the harsh taste, am I an alcoholic

Maybe, possibly. Try some high proof baijiu and report back.

The good ones unfortunately are quite expensive these days e.g. Maotai, Wuliangye etc.

I’d say good but still affordable would be Fenjiu and Luzhou Laojiao.

My favourite is unfortunately the paint thinner they sell as Erguotou, I can’t get enough of the sorghum fragrance but to the uninitiated it just tastes like burning. It is the cheapest one but you can also get more mellow aged versions depending on availability in your region.

That is absolutely not my department. I tried baijiu exactly once and never will again. It is up there with akvavit in the category of “Drinks I believe were made as pranks on the unprepared”

It tastes like they sprayed the inside of the bottle with pesticide, it tastes like you’re on a hidden camera tv show and they want to see what they can get away with feeding you if they tell you it’s traditional, it tastes like a punishment, it hurts. Its alternate names are Burn wine or an archaic apothecary unit of measurement.

Oh I wonder what it is, it’s too cloudy to be soju, it looks like makgeolli.

If I remember Xi doesn’t really drink, edit: I learned he used to drink a lot but cut back as he got older but he used to go hard on baiju, makgeolli is a very light drink but depending on who made it it can actually be fairly tart or acidic. Maybe he’s not a bit fan of sour drinks.

His anti-corruption drive where he made communist officials stop drinking so damn much was a neoliberal plot to hollow out the ebil CCP so freedom and democracy can bloom in the near future! freedom-and-democracy

          https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/13/china-civil-servant-public-employee-austerity-drive-economy

Lol the guardian is very concerned about the effect on China’s economy this will have

Also having officials drink and dine out less is ‘austerity’(I mean in the most pedantic definition I guess it is, but comparing it to hollowing out of social services in the west is disingenuous as fuck)

An important skill. I’ve only had soju (chamisul), and that was very distinctly not for me.

Plain soju is way too harsh imo, the fruity ones are far superior. That said I prefer makgeolli because it’s a great summer drink to end the day with

IMO soju tastes like someone put some of that artificial coffee sweetener in (A slightly lighter) vodka to me. My possibly controversial take is that it would be a good base for cocktails that you would otherwise use vodka for, but I am not paying the premium for imported Korean booze to do so.

                TRUE

If I was paying the Trump “fuck you, peasant” tax for something imported from Korea, I’m sticking with anything plum flavored. I fucking love Asian plums
