My weekly preamble is in spoiler tags below.
preamble
To start as usual with the West Asia, I get the sense that we’re once again teetering on the edge of war between the US/Zionists and Iran, with Iran putting itself on high alert and conducting a major military exercise using dozens of ballistic missiles. I greatly struggle to see for what possible reason the US would try and attack Iran again when it’s been repeatedly proven that it simply isn’t going to work and that the consequences you receive are much worse than the damage you deal. The only conceivable motivation is a near-manic short-term desperation to try and bend the curve upwards on upcoming electoral results. Trump apparently covertly asked Iran if he could symbolically bomb Pickaxe Mountain without retribution and was denied - for those unaware, it’s a site in central Iran where the US speculates Iran is rapidly creating a nuclear enrichment facility for nefarious purposes.
The situation in Yemen continues its positive trend for Ansarallah, with their forces now entering Taiz proper after having taken all the territory around it, while also cementing their hold on the coastal plains near the Red Sea by taking some of the mountainous heights there. Egypt has made signals that it may get involved militarily, joining the club of countries that are trying and failing to stop Ansarallah. It’s a situation that, if you’ll excuse an imprecise historical comparison, is reminiscent of the situation in the then-newborn USSR, where an international coalition tried and failed to save the losing, reactionary side of the civil war there. With oil and transportation infrastructure getting hit all the time and various international meetings and summits getting cancelled and MBS seeming (rightfully) quite paranoid, the Saudi position is looking increasingly untenable. It has similarities with the Zionist entity in late 2023 - their choice is to stop their genocide, engage in diplomacy, and survive a bit longer; or continue their genocide and, in the process, anger everybody, and risk being destroyed in the process.
I admit that it took about two months longer than I predicted, but the spark that was the US attacking Iran is now a conflagration spreading around the world. Several of the protests didn’t begin due to problems with fossil fuel supplies, to be clear, but it’s certainly contributing to the public anger in pretty much every case. It’s hard for me to even be aware of all the protests and riots going on, let alone mention them, let alone analyse them, so to just go through a smattering of the ones that have received a lot of press coverage, we have: France, which began as students protesting an idiotic attempt at education reform and now involves at least over 500,000 and perhaps closer to a million people; in Albania, where protestors are demanding the resignation of their Prime Minister and are now burning down state buildings; in Italy, Portugal, and Belgium, which are simultaneously protesting education and/or austerity; massive protests in India which began months ago due to economic hardship in general and the Chief Justice calling the unemployed “cockroaches” in particular; in Indonesia, with protestors angry at the lack of a meaningful response to the extreme wildfires; in Pakistan, protesting the slide into de facto dictatorship under Army Chief Asim Munir; and lots of smaller scale protests and strikes around the world usually consisting of people who directly depend on diesel (truckers, farmers, etc) who simply cannot afford to keep working while fuel is so expensive.
Without the influence of socialist organizations, it’s likely that many protests will be at least temporarily repressed; however, while the situation in the Middle East goes unresolved and the Zionists continue to refuse to accept Iran’s conditions, Lenin’s dictum of “every society is three meals away from chaos” may start to apply regardless. We’re still at least a good few months away from that in most countries, but the trend line is definitely visible.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Drives me up the wall how anyone trusts electronic/machine voting. The only time it can ever work is in an open ballot.
tbf, if say there was a screen inside concealed booth, which shows numbers going +1 after your vote, then space for manipulation is limited. just take pictures of it by singular concerned voters, if the total at 19:43, mismatches total at closure too much or in negative direction, it’s quite obvious what happened. the secrecy of the vote is fairly preserved, unless your concern is some boutique secret agents double siding before and after one voter, and at that point - machine is the least of your liberal problems.
Yes but then you’re just pushing the problem to the aggregation of numbers. And what benefit is the machine bringing anyway?
The 2000 election went to George Bush because of hanging chad issues on paper ballots delaying the vote count. If all the votes were allowed to be counted before the supreme court halted it, Al Gore would have won
hanging chad
no calls to violence

balatro mentioned !!nn
✨ efficiency ✨
not having people fumbling with stacks of paper.
I don’t think there’s any way around getting representatives from all interested parties to keep an eye on each other as they count the votes manually.
It’s a simple, straightforward and efficient solution that actually works.
This is exactly how it works in Canadian elections at all levels of government. We get accurate results pretty quickly.
Indeed - voting machines are a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist

Software engineering has to be one of the only instances of applied mathematics that seems to be proud of building tools such as a human readable*** machines language where a typo means the program crashes (best case scenario) or everyone dies.
The C programming language being the origin of everything was a disaster for the human race
. Communists would have standardized on lisp
or actually evolved C beyond compiler specific changes. It’s only last year that progress on programming language research made decades ago actually made its way to the C standard and it’s a proposal for an edition of C that will be adopted by 1% of projects who can afford to use a newer standard and not stick to C99 or C11 for a few more decades.
C++ folks
… yeah. One of the things I really like about the Go language is that it was made by literally many of the same people who made C and Unix. They sat down, asked themselves “What did we fuck up with C? What did Bjorn fuck up with C++? What did everyone else fuck up with their languages?” And then they actually applied those lessons learned. It’s certainly still possible to write unsafe code in Go but one really needs to work at it.
I don’t even trust electronic gambling machines (not that I gamble but still) since there’s basically no possible way for a random person to know what’s actually going on “behind the scenes” and you just have to trust that the machine designed to take as much of your money as possible is on the level and actually following the advertised odds.
Electronic voting sounds like it’s almost designed to be easily manipulated with as little evidence as possible
Yeah it’s the same thing lol. See also postal vote counting machines in the UK. They are black boxes run by private companies and the code isn’t audited by anyone afaict. Many suspect they swung the Scottish indie ref and perhaps even Brexit.
What a coincidence that the AI companies that Trump is in bed with are leaning hard into hacking at this very moment!
Claude hand me the election make no errors.
10 biddigan votes for Trump vs 0 votes everyone else
Brags about getting 1 brazillian votes, immediately triggering an ICE raid on the White House.more like manipulated numbers will be in bigendian format, and normal in small endian, and there would be big kerfuffle with increasingly desperate nerds trying to tell that this doesn’t happen
they are gonna have a 105% turnout in counties with 8,000 people. This is gonna be so fucking funny.
More like 105% turnover in counties that don’t exist.
ooh is it an apple turnover
:heimlich-boysenberry:
huh this is weird some guy named Claude Amodei voted a hundred billion times

That’s just because you aren’t voting hard enough

Real “every accusation is a confession” hours
I don’t get the need for having voting machines. Hand-counted paper ballots are the superior choice and comes with the benefit that everybody can understand the process, thereby increasing trust in the system.
There is not even a time benefit to voting machines. Paper ballots can be counted by hand within a few hours, especially for simple first past the post elections like those in America where you don’t have to account for candidate lists. The only benefit I can see is reduced labour costs for officials which really is a bullshit excuse compared to what states happily fork money out for.

Calgary Opera Have Doubled Down On Their Cancellation Of A Performer For Displaying The Palestinian Flag
Future ‘Tosca’ performances in Canada’s Calgary Opera will not feature bass singer Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega.
The Calgary Opera apologised to pro-Israel viewers who it spoke to like they were victims, simply for having to view the flag of the people they are seeking to oppress and erase from existence.
I finished reading Nick Turse’s ‘Kill Everything that Moves’ about how American strategy in Vietnam involved systematic execution of war crimes dictated from the top down, aimed at killing as many Vietnamese as possible to demonstrate a growing body count as evidence that the war was winnable.
It’s a difficult read, with many pages of description of war crimes. A few things that jumped out at me:
-
in the movie Apocalypse Now, the protagonist is sent up river by the US military to kill Colonel Kurtz because Kurtz had gone insane. Kurtz is treated like an aberrant mad dog that the military wanted put down. In reality, the most Kurtzian figure depicted in Kill Everything that Moves, General Westmoreland, was supported by the military and the civilian adminstration, he weathered My Lai just fine and died of old age in 2005.
-
I didn’t know that South Korean troops were so heavily involved in Vietnam. The use of foreign proxy/vassal forces including South Vietnamese and South Korean to do dirty work creates plausible deniability between American decision makers and those that wield the knife (or the water board or the electrical torture). Parallels can clearly be seen in other US led operations, like the use of Egyptian/Israeli/Iraqi black sites in the global war on terror or the use of El Salvador’s prisons in preventing migration.
-
-
I’m gonna return to my coverage of the world’s rebellions as promised, but I gotta do real organizing and family and work shit so it’s delayed
-
Also, I’m George R.R. Martin, and here’s a different piece of political analysis that’s top of mind:

In Ohio,
Senate candidate Greg Levy is starting to show up meaningfully in the polls:
Greg, as a guy, is simply the best. He’s a full-time mover working 40 hours a week for two men and a truck. He’s a dedicated comrade who’s been in the streets loud and proud for years and runs a secular revolutionary gospel choir. We love Greg.
Ohio is a politically significant state for three main reasons: relatively large population that’s demographically similar on most accounts to the US as a whole; considered a major political bellweather that can meaningfully indicate the national mood; and a major economic region (roughly equivalent GDP to Turkiye) with manufacturing, AI datacenter scramble, world-leading medical institutions, and all-in-all a big boy for the bourgeoisie who run the show here about as freely as anywhere on planet earth.
PSL is running Senate campaigns for the first time. Contrary to the dead-end political advice of liberals who say you need to elect a bunch of pointless school board members to go anywhere, our argument is that you aim for high profile, high-impact races to raise the profile and organization of the party as a revolutionary vehicle. To that end, we picked Ohio and Massachusetts for our first forays into this scale of electoral work (MA is also going great, polling as high as 19% [!] although results in the 5-10% range seem more likely). We’ve been campaiging pretty hard all summer to extremely positive reception, targeting Black working class communities in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Akron and generally everybody loves us. I’ve been told so often at people’s doors ‘you folks probably aren’t ready for what I think, cause this country needs a revolution’ and I get to enthusiastically affirm that view and invite them into political action. There are whole neighborhoods stacked up with Greg signs delivered on the explicit promise of a socialist third party that fully rejects the Democrats and Republicans. We built on our extensive community networks and organization trust, especially in Cleveland and Columbus, to get Greg to around 2-3% in most polling.
Then, starting in late September, we kicked up our canvassing efforts substantially, and that lead to the poll above, which has fascinating implications.
Obviously, the response we get from online libs on Reddit and Instagram is pretty uniform: we cannot afford to take votes away from Sherrod Brown, Hero of the Imperialist Trade Unions and AIPAC, during such a critical election, so Greg should just lay in a hole and die if the voters don’t rightfully kill him first. Our argument is two fold: one, we don’t care, fuck the dems; two, we aren’t drawing from the same voter pool at this stage but instead we’re activating people who weren’t going to vote for either candidate in the first place. And that poll bears out our entire argument. Sherrod Brown is up by a whopping 6%, an absolute drubbing in an Ohio that seemed irreversibly Republican (if you listen to idealist libs, at least) while Greg is ALSO polling at 5%. Our on-thr-ground work has done a ton to boost the campaign’s visibility and we did it all while raising less than $100k throughout the whole campaign, running entirely on party cadre and non-party volunteers. For us, our big spend was a whopping 5 billboards statewide, but we’ve still been booming.
And then something very interesting happened after this polling period. A Republican-run PAC started sending out AI-generated pro-Greg mailers en masse, dropping almost half a million dollars. Now they’ve apparently increased their spend and are running AI pro-Greg TV ads during major sporting events that target Brown for being pro-Israel and pro-private prison. Greg’s campaign disavowed and condemned this trick, and Greg rejects being utilized as an AI blackface pawn for inter-bourgeois political competition. This has kicked off a new round of lib screeching that we’re just a ‘GOP op’, and our response to that is simply an opportunity for us to reinforce our total opposition to both billionaire parties: they may think we’re a joke or a sideshow for now, but it looks to me like we’re only 7 weeks away from a Marxist-Leninist party to get more than 5% in two major statewide elections for the first time since the Great Depression at least. The actual GOP trickery will not be enough to win over Brown because Jon Husted is just a lizard that performs sex doll performance for Trump and has had no campaign besides a detranser from Texas and Brown is genuinely pretty popular here. What it will do is push our numbers even higher and solidify the best third party performance in Ohio since the Worker’s World Party got 6.7% in 1992, and frankly I’m thinking we can beat that.
Ohio’s going to have a dramatic, high-profile Senate election this year that will receive significant national coverage when Brown predictably upsets Husted, and all that TV coverage is going to have to feature the Black communist veteran dad who grew up in public housing as the reason why neither candidate crossed 50%. Obviously we’re not going to be positively covered, but it’s going to blow up a lot of the Dem myths about elections that have already taken a beating from DSA primary wins, and it should raise to the many millions of politically hopeless people that if a genuine political alternative can take off in Ohio, it can take off anywhere in this country. All that ‘bad press’ is only going to raise the profile of a party who says cut the check for reparations now, cut the military budget by 90%, supports a single Palestinian state from the river to the sea, and (if you look at Greg’s campaign material) is consistent and disciplined about the need for a Literal Fucking Revolution in this country to much applause.
Thank you for your efforts on the ground and the quality posts of updates!

I really feel like the “centrist” “moderate” position for many Americans is that we need revolution. My mom, in many ways a very average “American”, two decades ago said that her hope for the future was that the credit and banking system collapsed and erased all debt. That’s why Trump became so popular, he talked about substantial outside-the-system change, he wasn’t an elite (although really he was able to succeed because he was backed by the wealthy). Anything the democratic party does is seen as part of the “elite” by most. Local subreddits are notoriously reactionary but even on a few of those I’ve seen PSL shared to positive response. The libs on Bluesky have been widely praising the level of action in France and Albania.
I think you’re 100% correct. My anecdotal experience is that most people accept a revolution is necessary but they don’t believe it’s possible. We need to show them it is.
I think this is precisely why post-apocalypse TV shows and prepping are so popular right now.
Basically the quote “It has become easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”
While I know the following means nothing either electorally or for building class consciousness… it really warms my commie heart to see a PSL candidate outperform the Libertarian Party candidate in a race.
It definitely doesn’t mean nothing. It reflects some combination of the party’s organizing potential, the appeal of anti-systemic politics generally and socialism specifically, and a collapse in the false consciousness of libertarianism.

Burkina Faso moves to decolonize education through curriculum reform
Burkina Faso’s new school programs seek to challenge colonial portrayals of African history, elevate liberation struggles and indigenous knowledge, and strengthen national and cultural sovereignty.
Liberation struggles are at the centre of the new curricula, Armel said. “African states and countries of the Global South have always fought for their emancipation. The history of these struggles must be known by present and future generations,” he said. “It is in this spirit that the Haitian Revolution, the Chinese Revolution, and Thomas Sankara’s revolution are being taught.”
“The objective is to sow the seeds of revolution among young students,” he said. He noted that the Ministry has developed teaching modules and curricula and distributed them to teachers.
There‘s to hoping they drop French as a subject next. And revert all the ridiculous gallified spelling back to its original roots, like Ouagadougou to Wagadugu (fun fact dugu is manding for home/house/town).
French is still the language of government administration and changing that over would be enormously difficult and costly. There’s no majority language in BF, and French is almost nobody’s first language. It seems like Mooré would be the right indigenous pick for administration, though that is complex.
In my little knowledge of French
Ouais, abas l’imperialisme culturelle

Minor gripe but I’m surprised there’s no mention of Amilcar Cabral. He contributed quite a bit to this theory / pedagogy and he carried it out pretty successfully - he even inspired much of Paulo Freire’s work. IIRC he also coined the term “Re-Africanization”.
His contributions to the broader liberation of Angola, Mozambique, etc - and communication of revolutionary defeatism to their colonizers and the people in the heart of the Portuguese empire - are massively inspiring. He was an incredible communist and deserves more credit and study IMO.
Just in case you’re not yet convinced that khat is essentially real-life spice melange from Dune that gives you powers of precognition, here’s Ansarallah fighters hitting a fucking moving target about 6km away with an ATGM:

WSJ got their hands on Anthropic’s draft S1 form. It looks like Anthropic made $16 billion in revenue in the first 6 months of the year, this got them a nice cool $80 billion loss. Any normal company would instantly declare bankruptcy after these results. $2 billion of their revenue was interest income on the cash they weren’t able to spend yet.

Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them.
The most amazing thing about this is that Amazon will keep buying more anyway. It looks like Nvidia and all their partners have decided they want to make PC components as expensive as possible. Their hobby is creating inflation.

Burkina Faso Bans Privatization Of State-Owned Enterprises:
https://nitter.perennialte.ch/Spearhead_Af/status/2113272915739460083On October 19, 2026, Burkina Faso’s People’s Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a law banning the total or partial privatization of state-owned enterprises. Burkinabé state companies like CIM-SAHEL (cement), TEXFORCES-BF (textiles) and RAFFINOR-BF (gold) can no longer be legally privatized.
The French PM announced “localised” curfews in big cities, some places in Paris and Lyon, and in Marseille groupings are forbidden. Le Monde (French) live newsfeed with no paywall, Regular Le Monde article with no paywall
Additionally, Mélenchon said that the PM suggested using Article 16 of the Constitution, which allows for the suspending of all constitutional freedoms and parliamentary activity, and granting emergency powers to the president and government. This has only been used once since the current Constitution was promulgated, during the Algerian war of independence when fascist generals tried to assassinate de Gaulle because he finally recognised he couldn’t stop independence. I don’t think a PM has ever openly mentioned Article 16 in recent memory, but I may be wrong on that (also, the PM can’t proclaim emergency powers, only the president can, but since Macron fucked off to the Middle East the PM is basically speaking for him now, even more than he usually is). Regardless, this is still serious stuff that the guy speaking for Macron is putting emergency powers on the table.
Edit: I put a Nitter link now Edit edit: changed “mentioned” to “suggested” for clarity
Imagine how easily the French government could just give the people what they want rather than fucking murdering them in the streets
it’s always this way. Think about how small the ask of the original George Floyd protesters was. Convict one (1) cop of a crime. That’s it. They let half the country burn before they finally submitted to that demand that should have been a no-brainer for any competent bourgeois administrator. It doesn’t matter how minor the demand is, the bourgeois state can never cede demands willingly. It would make them appear weak, and thus, less legitimate, and reinforce that direct action and riots actually delivers on results and is the correct path to take for future grievances. It would confirm to the masses that class struggle can get results, which they want to obscure by all means possible.
The ruling class sees concessions like this through the lens of “give a mouse a cookie” mindset. They believe every single little crumb they cede only encourages future demands, and it never ends. So they put their foot down immediately instead of sliding down the slippery slope to revolution.
The function, of, that police action, Those interventions in Central America and the Middle East, The function is system sustaining. It is to maintain that overall system. And you don’t look at the particular cost. I can demonstrate to you that every single bank robbery, That in every single case practically, the cost of the police was more then the actual money that the robbers took from the bank. Does that mean, oh you see? There’s really no economic interest involved in it. They’re not protecting the banks! The police are just doing this because they’re on a power trip, or they’re macho, or uh they’re control freaks. That’s why they do it. No! Of course it’s an economic, of course they’re defending the banks. Of course, because if they didn’t stop that bank robbery, regardless of the cost, This could jeopardize the entire banking system. You see, there are people who believe that the function of the police is to fight crime. And that’s not true, the function of the police is social control, and protection of property.
Semi-related Parenti quote.
I think student movements are much more likely to get wild and out of control than other forms. Workers organising under unions listen to their leadership, as do members of political parties or just general protest movements with older members of the protests.
Student movements however are much more likely to not listen to leaders and act how they feel in the moment. Students also have significantly less to risk and lose than a dude with a job and his family to consider.
Imagine Macron proclaiming a state of emergency live from Riyadh…
I have a few theories on why Macron would have Lecornu (PM) suggest that, but take them with a grain of salt since I’m spitballing (and I’m not in the country this year). It could be that he’s fearmongering to justify less drastic, but still drastic, measures, like a state of siege or generalised curfews. It could also be that Macron knows that there’s no way he’s passing his incredibly austere budget this year without bypassing parliament, and since emergency powers last a few months he could pass the budget himself this way (a bit like the previous president of the Republic of Samsung). Also he could use emergency powers to delay or even cancel the election! Especially since there’s a good chance Mélenchon would win. Or, less drastically, there have been right wing parties that called for the dissolution of LFI (Mélenchon’s
partymovement), and given all the effort that the government is spending to lay the blame of all violence happening in the country on LFI, that’s a possibility. There may be other reasons but these are the two that come to mind. How to turn half a million protesters into 5 million protesters: a speed run
curfews
good luck with that
Yeah, there’s no way it’ll be followed; they just want an excuse to be even more indiscriminately violent against protestors and any passerby so that people are too scared to protest. That’s the strategy since the Yellow Vests started back in 2018, just now even more explicit.
