Also puzzling to me is why they can’t just bring food and packages to the sailors through another ship.

The latest NC article about the Iran conflict contains two interesting testimonies related to the sailors throwing themselves overboard on the USS Lincoln story; one from a recently-retired officer from the US military, another from the mother of a deployed sailor (not on the Lincoln though, on the amphibious assault ship Tripoli).
Here is the first one, from the ex-mil guy, emphasis mine:
And finally the truth. This is making the rounds. If the Lincoln has 5,000 people on it and it hasn’t seen land in 38 weeks… they are starving, no packages, rationing coffee, waiting to die from a fucking Iranian hypersonic. They say the number is 6 attempts. Nearly a year at sea no land, etc. the real number of attempts is likely 5-fold or 10-fold.
You have more attempts at suicide on a NORMAL carrier operation…
As an officer, like them, I have had to do a number of Army Regulation 15-6 Command Investigations on Soldiers committing suicide. All officers have, it’s a normal function. Suicide is a very real and stable number, too. And that’s while you are still in. They have no clue what’s waiting for them the first night they return home (or wherever)… Suicide is a part of daily life in the military.
Here’s another example: in the big units, such as 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne…if the unit makes it 82 or 101 days without a DUI everyone gets a 4 day weekend. Well, they never got over 3 weeks without one, regularly. So they had to increase the denominator to…suicides. Everyone gets a long weekend if we make it to 82 days without a suicide in OUR OWN UNIT…
Only 6 suicide attempts of 5,000 on an aircraft carrier that is a tinderbox of rage, frustration, and waiting on death? Multiple by 5, minimum. Eventually they end up just telling direct line supervisors if your sailor or soldier kills themself, it’s on YOU.
And less interesting but still relevant, from the sailor’s mom:
I believe I told you I’ve been worried about the mental health of these sailors & marines aboard the navy ships at war. Why? Because they removed all chaplains off my sons ship, the USS TRIPOLI. They kicked them off in Diego Garcia, right before their last leg of trip to entering CENTCOM. This pisses me off. I called so many politicians and raised those alarm bells about their removals. I asked how many other chaplains were removed on other ships??? Again nobody would call me back or email me these answers. And here we are, sailors trying to commit suicide at war. Good GOD, Hegseth NEEDS TO BE FIRED! I guarantee you many military families aren’t aware that their loved ones chaplains were removed before going to war. This is a critical asset to have a chaplain while at war!!! … Politicians need to demand his firing and immediately place chaplains back on every navy ship, especially at war…

This is footage purported to be from Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan during an Iranian attack; filmed by a US soldier.
Assuming this is genuine, just look at that bomb shelter. I don’t think this would even stop shrapnel.

Details (to be confirmed):
The data center itself remained intact, but the electrical substation was struck.
Batelco DC in southeast Bahrain. Finding details about it is surprisingly hard. This is becoming more and more true of datacenters in general as their position as military and activism targets becomes realized more widely.

Half of us live in Langley anyway, you should’ve sent a bulk package to the office

The occupiers are reaching levels of supervillain never thought possible before - this is from the entity’s Jerusalem Post:
Israel changes crocodiles legal status in push for Ben-Gvir’s ‘crocodile prison’
From the article:
Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman declared the Nile crocodile a “cultivated wild animal” in a move intended to allow the Israel Prison Service to station crocodiles around prisons, despite opposition from her ministry’s legal adviser and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, Ynet reported on Thursday.
Silman issued the declaration to enable National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to establish his proposed “crocodile prison.” Pressure was placed on the Israel Nature and Parks Authority several months ago to allow the National Security Ministry to receive crocodiles from Hamat Gader and position them around prisons holding security prisoners. The program was expected to be piloted at Ketziot Prison.
This is insanity.

It very likely is the death blow for oil. I am also deeply convinced it comes too late for much of us; much of the science that predicted the effects of climate change was based on models, not historical data (admittedly due to there being no historical precedent of course); models that were consistently ignoring unquantifiable second-order effects from the increasingly changed climate - some of them diminishing the effect, a majority of them increasing it.
And much of the scenarii - often very optimistic in general, both due to being based on years-old science when published and due to fear of being called an alarmist - from the IPCC also rely on mass carbon-removal at scale, something that has never been demonstrated as either possible or implementable in our current economic system.
And I would add: I lowkey think every modern leftist discourse should consider and incorporate these facts front and center. We are materialists if anything and should face the facts; I believe there will be massive wake up calls in terms of the consequences in much of the world very soon - this is terrain ripe for change.

I’m deeply hoping this is true
Mind you the foundation the researchers belong to appears to be genuinely Congolese and homegrown from a few quick searches - I didn’t find the usual imperialist NGO/CIA signals; but also the researchers are both white. The org is also and at first glance incredibly low-funded, to the point where their DNS is now squatted (hence the archive link above), and both their organization and the larger national park they apparently belong to do not appear to have functioning websites (closest is this).

But C. congoensis appears still quite elusive. When the researchers polled the 52 communities around the new monkey’s range, residents in just eight of the communities were familiar with it. The people in the Balanga ethnic group living west of the Lomami River call the monkey likweli, and the Mituku communities around the monkey’s eastern range call the species kasaba knkoni, which translates to “the branch shaker.”
The likweli’s coat is black and glossy and shines under certain light. The monkey’s face is dark, too, except for a halo of bare skin around the mouth that can be the color of a peach or an orange creamsicle. The monkeys have long black facial hairs that give them a charmingly electrocuted appearance
They’re pretty awesome. There’s video in the article.

Reminds me of COVID
This will be climate change too, mark my words (except for the last part where instead of throwing the towel much of modern civilization will stop); in the case of the ongoing energy crisis I’m sure they were banking on the US bourgeoisie not being suicidal / Trump pulling back. They were wrong.

the MoU. I’d guess that the world got about ~1 week of extra oil supply in two weeks
With at most 20% (generous side of the estimates I’ve seen) of the usual traffic going through during the MoU, that seems optimistic.

The watermark right in the middle of your preview makes it look like they shot down a weird-ass UFO

Recently he also said after seeing banners calling for his death:
I am on all their lists. And so far, I think I’ve been a bit lucky, but maybe this luck won’t last long.

Definitely a good idea, sadly

Maybe this; I quote (I’m assuming I don’t need to CW given the whole thread is but I’ll edit if I’m wrong):
Computer-assisted self-interviews were completed with a random sample of 163 unmarried Caucasian and African American men in a large metropolitan area. Almost a quarter (24.5%) of these men acknowledged committing an act since the age of 14 that met standard legal definitions of attempted or completedremoved; an additional 39% had committed another type of sexual assault involving forced sexual contact or verbal coercion
Then again it might be this (depressing I found two candidate studies immediately with a single shitty search):
In college and community samples, rates of self-reportedremoved perpetration range from 6% to 15%, and rates of sexual assault perpetration range from 22% to 57%
I didn’t look at either in depth / their methodology; but I wouldn’t be surprised. I am a man and I can count on the fingers of a single hand the amount of men I’ve known in my life that didn’t feel comfortable saying objectifying stuff about women when there were none around.

The US could nuke every major city in Iran I guess and end the war that way but I don’t see that happening
End the war maybe, open the strait I don’t think even nuclear carpet bombing would work. There would be survivors in those missile cities and I suspect they would keep going.
(all of this assuming an absence of international reaction on top of it, obviously)
I’m worried that the likely outcome here is the US continues to economically destabilize Iran by killing people and destroying civilian infrastructure until Iran collapses.
As you said I think the global economy would collapse before that. This is not a stable situation that can keep going for many more months. I still think this is a much worse energy crisis than in the 70s, and that one changed the world. The reserves are still being drawn, and the paltry amount of traffic during the MoU doesn’t change shit. The fact the markets haven’t caught up yet / are being manipulated doesn’t change the facts - in fact it’ll likely make the eventual wall even worse (that or as someone from the previous mega said there’s a huge puzzle piece missing / our or at least my understanding of how modern civilization works is deeply flawed).
You say the US is fully ready to go that far, but I think that would make it risk collapse itself and the bourgeois there would find an exit before that, like offing Trump - it’d make a good excuse to end the conflict, doubly so if you false flag it towards an easier target (say, Cuba).

I find it pretty fucking funny they’re talking about licensing rights for missiles.
Maybe Iran should sue the US for their (inferior, and more expensive) Shahed copy.
Also, from the article:
"We’re going to give a license to you to make Patriots. That’s pretty cool. This way, you can’t complain that we’re not giving 'em enough," Trump said at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the NATO summit in Ankara.
Yep, that’s exactly the limiting factor here: licensing rights. The gigantic Ukrainian industrial base was going to get right on it but they were afraid to be in breach of IP; now solved !
companero is right, this is purely PR for the imperial citizenry.

From Al Jazeera:
Trump says MoU to end Iran war is ‘over’
A few quotes:
United States President Donald Trump says the ceasefire with Iran is “over”, describing Iranian leaders as “sick people” after Iran and the US exchanged attacks.
“I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them any more, they’re scum,” Trump said on Wednesday at a NATO summit in the Turkish capital Ankara, when asked if the ceasefire with Iran was over.
“They’re scum, they’re sick people, they’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.”
Trump also said he would speak to his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who have been leading US negotiations with the Iranians, but insisted it was up to Tehran to return to the table.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars.”
Trump’s comments came after Iran said it hit 85 US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for US attacks on its Hormozgan province and the port city of Mahshahr.
I know he’s shameless but calling Iran “liars” after the last few weeks is genuinely something.
And Hegseth just cancelled his today trip to occupied Palestine.
Makes sense, thanks !
It’s from a sailor’s mother, maybe “they’re out of water” really means “showers and faucets don’t work anymore”, who knows. Especially since she mentions soap right after. And it would be in line with shit like the laundry fires and fucked plumbing on other ships.
I eagerly hope for more hilarious testimonies from the US navy.
