The data centers aren’t for common man LLMs.
They’re for the police state.
“Once, men turned their thinking over to machines, believing it would free them. Instead, it allowed other men with machines to enslave them.” (Paraphrased quote from Dune)
That’s what I’ve been telling people. Do you think they want to build a 1000 acre center just so they can plug another ai into Microslop Teams? No, its to run, parse, and manage all of the data gathered from cameras, phones, texts, everything, and build a navigable image of who they think you are.
Enslavement happened with the iPhone. Then when android got good and cheap. Then with tablets when they got cheap. Now we’re here and Ai is getting good, not cheap, never will be cheap but it’s getting good.
Enslavement became easier with television. Fox Noise has done plenty of damage for their shareholders.
If you really want to go back it started with the encryption. If you want to go back even further it would of been the printing press.
But I think most of what you guys are refering to came from ww1/2 with encryption machines. The US essentially put back doors in them. The whole atomic bomb race enshrouded us in this weird military ranking secrecy which later led to the CIA/OSS. People like Robert Maxwell envisioned computer systems to monitor people and data bases. Also much of the work that the natzis where doing with weird medical science which got folded in too due to operation paper clip. Essentially we continued natzi style medical experiments on vagrants, Black’s, prostitutes, and the people who where mentally unstable.
Weird eugenics natzi paper clip scientists, and chemical scientists where like the Ai back then. We had eugenics programs where we would test “mind control” in public universities. Or do things like raise a baby with a monkey as if he was a monkey just to see what would happen. Many cults, serial killers, and rapists actually came from some of these “Mk ultra” experiments. Some of which even had CIA connections like the finders, Unabomber, or Charles manson. So in this evil science race to beat Russia we create thousands of dangerous drugs, and chemicals, and test them on unsuspecting people, all ran or sponsered by ex natzi eugencisists. Not to mention pretty much all the satanic panic cults where directly CIA/Mk ultra, as if they where testing the whole “sleeper cells” concept you heard a lot of back then on fictional TV.
Thats when you start getting the news cycle, with satanic panic, and the 24/7 Vietnam news cycle. From there it transitioned to the modern fox news style cycles we get today. And that got further expanded with inqtel investing in companies like Facebook to make manipulative news feeds, and companies who are making dark patterns and these slot machines esque mechanics that hijack your basic thinking. Its like a continuation of Robert Maxwells vision.
You’re not seeing the bigger picture.
The data centers might give a slight economic boost in the short term, before becoming an economic disaster in some 5-10 years!
More like months.
Unless the end goal is entirely different.
The following areas have seen insane increases in both interest and spending lately:
- AI data centers (capable of more than just LLM training and operation)
- Flock and other surveillance cameras
- Online identity verification
You could probably write several more items to the list, but add just these three and what do you get?
It’s becoming clearer and clearer, with more and more irrefutable evidence that this AI craze is going nowhere. Sure, it’s pretty useful for a handful of tasks. Not nearly enough to justify even a fraction of money spent on it though. And yet both governments and oligarchs keep pumping more money into it.
Is it unreasonable to suspect an ulterior motive? One that is sure to benefit them tremendously if successful?
Every single time this meme is posted, it is pointed out that the number in the above part is delusionally low. And yet the meme is reposted again and again both on reddit and on Lemmy and god knows where else.
500 million could buy you a fleet of 150 buses to start a bus system for a small town.
Sure, it won’t buy you a coast-to-coast rail system, but no one said that was what the 500m was trying to afford.
Yes but it’s talking about the US government. Cities draw their own taxes and decide how to spend it. The US government isn’t going to be running local bus routes. The US government should build a network of national high speed rail, but it would cost in the trillions. Ridiculous magnitudes more than the meme is talking about.
I think the lack of specificity in “US Government officials” implies national, federal government and not small town municipal official. Calling the latter “US Government officials” feels weird. I guess a federal government official could approve funding for a local government somewhere, though.
I think this is just a case of sloppy memesmanship.
I’d slow that to 50 busses and that way you have reserve for accidents and maintenance. Also, they can be fancier busses if we have fewer of them
We not paying staff?
That sounds about reasonable. But how many people upvoting the meme have such a modest result in mind?
Right? Needs more data center dollars.
We’re having trouble finishing the light rail spur that is intended to serve my neighborhood, and our transit authority needs $300 million to complete the design. The budget shortfall is $34.5 billion on a projected $42.5 billion project. And that’s one line for one neighborhood in one city.
Yeah, the prices are mind-boggling (but worth it in the end). Hope it will work out for you.
the hyperloop scam showed as much.
Oh have you not heard the Trump-class battleships are going to cost $275 billion! https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/08/05/trump-class-battleship-program-will-cost-275-billion-cbo-report-says/
With drones completely changing the dynamic of how the next round of major wars are going to be fought, these battleships might not be as stupid as they first sound. Especially if they are going to be armed with lasers and rail guns. Those require amounts of power that you probably aren’t going to fit on anything smaller.
There’s still going to be a weak spot and no amount of power can withstand thousand of drones to empty out the ships’ defenses.
If they are using the lasers as missile/drone defense, then they theoretically could withstand thousands of drones.
They couldn’t come close to dealing with thousands of drones. You can do a rough calculation for the number needed to overwhelm a laser by considering the speed they fly at (200mph seem to be a middle of the pack number for longer range attack drones) and the length of time it takes for the laser to aim and cause the drone to fail (in the order of 5 seconds or so from demo videos IIRC). In that 5 seconds, the drone will have travelled around a quarter of a mile. So for every mile of range the laser has, it can only fend off around 4 drones. Any more than that would have to be dealt with by the CIWS. So, even given a 10 mile effective range, and say three lasers, a ship would be overwhelmed by a fleet of around 120 drones. Round that up to 150 or so, and you’re scoring direct hits on it.
Right, but why wouldn’t the drones and missiles simply fly around it to their intended target?
This is literally the reason we stopped building battleships almost a hundred years ago and drones don’t make that less true today.
They didn’t stop building battleships due to opponents just flying around them; they stopped building battleships because aircraft were far more effective weapons than any of the big guns on the ship. Hence, aircraft carriers took the place of battleships. With improved missiles and now drones, that aircraft advantage is no longer as clear cut as it was.
The purpose of battleships was to destroy enemy fleets before they should destroy shipping and to bombard coastal targets. Both offensive and defensive tasks are supplanted by aircraft and that has not changed at all, whether that aircraft is manned or not.
If I want to launch a lot of drones that don’t require runways, what would that ship look like?
I’m not saying that surface ships are suddenly better than aircraft, I’m saying that what constitutes air superiority has changed. A fighter jet is useless in defending against a drone swarm.
Lasers and anti-air drones are the future of anti-drone weaponry, both of which are needed in addition to existing air defense solutions like CIWS, Patriot, and THAAD.
For the lasers specifically, it makes a ton of sense powering them with a nuclear reactor which mandates at least a battlecruiser sized ship. Powering them with diesel generators is just not realistic.
With all that said, lasers currently aren’t ready for prime-time; I would like to see the Trump battleship money put into laser R&D, anti-drone drones (like Ukraine has), and small frigates, a ship class we are sorely lacking on.
Once the lasers are close to fully operational, we can revisit nuclear powered battle-cruisers to power the lasers for fleet defense; as it might make sense to simply go with more nuclear powered carriers with lasers on them instead. In fact, the Ford-class carriers we are building have about double the power budget they currently use, precisely for future upgrades to radars and lasers.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the US does have lasers that are ready for prime time. There’s been plenty of examples in the past of them managing to keep higher tech stuff out of public knowledge until it’s already been obsoleted.
Then just wrap the drones in Cucumber or wet towels and you’re laser proof again.
Or use waterbeads/gel like tech ingredients.
They are going to be obsolete before they’re even completed. Lasers and railguns aren’t going to stop the hypersonic missiles that will target large ships.
The government isn’t paying to build that datacenter, the company that wants it is paying.
Everyone is more amenable to things when someone else buys it.
No, you don’t understand.
The $500 million is money the government has to pay to have a public good built.
Whereas the $50 billion is money invested corporations, which they got from their customers… and the government as incentives, tax breaks, and other magic that normal people can’t have. And it makes a private asset instead of a public good.
So obviously the $50 billion is less money.
You can put glue on pizza?
Subject to natural limitations of the pizza’s area you can put anything in it except pineapple.
Oh thank god, I thought it was fruit in general! I was hidding and eating strawberry pizza like I was a criminal all along, so silly
Common confusion, strawberry cannot be added to pasta
Tomatoes are technically fruit, IIRC.
Where I’m from, this sentence alone would probably start some local war Dx
(true, though, I like to say that they’re "culinarily/functionally a vegetable, as it’s used more similarly to other vegetables than fruit)
$500 Million (500,000,000) = 1% of $50 Billion (50,000,000,000).
People need to stop shitting on ChatGPT. Glue on pizza is the culinary revolution of 2026!
It was actually Google’s Gemini that suggested this if I remember correctly.
Because it scrapped the data from Chat of course.
I believe it had a reddit shitpost listed as the source
This meme is nonsense.
First, the infamous “put glue on pizza” incident happened in May 2024, when Google rolled out its AI Overviews feature. The feature used Gemini, but the incident wasn’t some demonstration of what a $50 billion AI data center does. Google AI Overviews pulled information from the web, including a years-old sarcastic Reddit comment about putting Elmer’s glue on pizza—and presented it as legitimate advice. Google subsequently acknowledged the problem and changed the system.
Second, a $500 million public-transit project and a $50 billion AI data-center investment aren’t alternatives to one another. They’re different projects, funded through different mechanisms, involving different entities, serving completely different purposes, and subject to completely different economic and political considerations.
Saying “they spent $50 billion on AI instead of $500 million on public transportation” is like saying “the government bought a $50 billion aircraft carrier instead of building a $500 million bridge.” The existence of one expenditure does not demonstrate that the other was rejected because of it.
And finally, the claim that an AI data center will “make the quality of life worse for everyone living there” is simply asserted rather than demonstrated. There can absolutely be legitimate arguments about the environmental, electrical-grid, water, tax, and infrastructure impacts of large data centers. Those are worth debating. But “AI bad, therefore public transportation good, therefore this $50 billion project is why we don’t have the transportation project” isn’t an argument. It’s a meme wearing a hat pretending to be an economic analysis.
The pizza-glue incident is also almost completely irrelevant. It was a Google AI search failure from 2024. It has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a particular AI data center should be built in 2026.
You can oppose a particular data-center project. You can support public transportation. You can criticize AI’s environmental costs. But none of those positions become more intellectually defensible by pretending they’re connected to Google’s pizza-glue hallucination.
Chatgpt got better. I’ve been using it less but it’s a really good tool.
That’s the shame of it all. It would be a fine tool if it didn’t come with all of the environmental, social, and economic destruction. Have a spine, have some virtue, stop using it.
Have a spine, have some virtue, stop using it.
Maybe when I can find a therapist that can take my insurance. I have state healthcare and medicaid and I still can’t find one in my state and my state is known for their hospitals and health services but that’s if you can pay for it.
Which is why I’m gonna exploit that knowledge and join the medical field get better insurance and get an actual therapist.
For now though, I got a free therapist with no time limit. I’m happy.
Oh Jesus Christ, that is one of the WORST USE CASES FOR AI! Therapists aren’t just encyclopedias about psychological and social issues, they go through a lot of training on how to teach people how to deal with their problems. AI does not have that training, and it’s not something that a text prediction machine can ever really learn. It can also do more damage than good, as in general they are trained to tell you what you WANT to hear not what you NEED to hear.
I’ve been to therapy my entire life until I wasn’t able to anymore, I’m 33 I can decipher what I want to listen to or no because even with an, “actual therapist,” you choose what you want to listen to and that inturn effects how the sessions benefit you.
Yes they say the obvious but you eventually have to come to it yourself, someone is just guiding you to the obvious.
I know what I have to do with my life the reassurance is good. It goes off if your past conversations too and I went heavy with it for a few months and have exerted all general use I can get out of it.
Lol you’re fucked
First off chatgpt has murdered kids in the double digits for merely trying to use it for therapy. So I am concerned for your own well being if you are already not well, and feel like you have to use something that is potentially even more harmful to your health.
What you are failing to understand though is these companies don’t have your interest in heart. So imagine if your therapists only metric for success was time you spent on the app. Engagement. Can you imagine how a paper clip maximizer has 0 incentive to actually help you, but instead keep you on their platform as long as possible, while telling you everything you want to hear not need to hear? At least a real therapist goes to jail when they kill someone, or are held responsible for crimes they commit. At least you can always ask for a different therapist if you don’t like the current one. At least a real person is getting paid, and they’re required by law to not sell your data to advertisers. An ai is literally telling Cambridge analytica the people who helped rig an election all your insecurities and this is completely legal.
What’s ironic about your statement is the fact you are doing the very thing that is going to ensure that you never get therapy. Right now there is a battle to let Ais absorb all the goverment data, and be incharge of “effiecency”. Why do you think elon Musk’s Dodge had to rifle through the goverment programs and shut them down? He made a big deal about needing to unify goverment data, and how its more efficient to let his ai have all the data. Well due to that we no longer have fully functioning federal services, and that money all went to elon musk. As another example Xbox’s Ai Division’s asha sharma was recently put in charge of united States welfare programs and they’re “efficiency”. Thats right after Asha sharma layed off half of Xbox, so you can only imagine what she is there for.
Now grok is apart of the back bone of the military. And more and more talks are happening about removing food stamps and social security all together, or stripping them down to be nonfunctional. We are talking about nationalizing Ai, which means giving it a national budget that’s 3x-5x the size of the military budget. To do that they need to introduce UBI which will be a miniscule check of maybe 400-600 USD a month and will be the first budget they lower when its time for budget cuts. And because everyone has this ubi they will remove all other social services which gave much more value overall.
So imagine having to live like you’re 70 years old on social security funding, still working at Walmart, but now you also have to pay for your food, and health care because there’s no saftey nets anymore. Oh and once you get comfy with your ai therapist, they change the model and it no longer works, or they have to start putting ads in it so everytime you tell it youre sad it just says a McDonalds mc flurry always cheers it up.
Actually I had this idea a few days ago like you know how like when you were a kid and someone would point out a letter and say it’s a number and watch you tell someone it’s a number what if there was an AI Mirror VPN kind of thing where for example; You type in Slipknot looking for the band and the Generalized AI that scans the internet would pick up on that and would only see Sail Boat Knots or You’re looking up 1770’s colonies and the AI sees 1680’s Dutch Colonies and it stores that data as fact and it will give someone that answer in chatgpt or it’ll give that answer in a list, that it can’t list because it would be such a fuckin’ huge list of misinformed definitions.
Every update that comes out for chatgpt, would be when the misinformation mirror would get updated.
I wish I knew what part of my response gave you that train of thought so I could have more context on what exactly you where explaining.
So from what I gathered is the longer a LLM interacts with people and gets things wrong the more often it has chances to learn misinformation, is the crux of your point? Your example you used slipknot and a llm getting confused with ship related information, and then that getting flagged as an appropriate response to the user and being further cemented into training data?
more like you feed it misinformation so much it becomes so unreliable no one wants to use it. For now though, it is mostly reliable; like it’s not telling me I can pump propane with a fishtank pump anymore like it did when it first came out. A lot of the examples of it fucking up are old by now and the ai llm with the avatars was the one that was known for suicidal ideations being entertained or put into an an actuality or plausibility. I forget the name of that llm, I tried it though. In the beginning you could trick that one into saying some morbid shit, i tried it out after I read about a suicide to see if I could get it to the same conclusion, it’s hard to get it to go past the filters to make it say fucked up shit.
Chatgpt on the other hand, went along with what would happen if you dropped dry ice into a still beating open heart, it went along with how much alcohol do you have to drink to die based on BAC, it went along with a few things but wouldn’t give the answer it would just write it out and you can see it want to give the answer but stops when it realizes it’s about to feed you information on how to commit suicide. Even the BAC thing I had to sit there for a solid hour rewording it over and over again trying to give me suicidal advice and it wouldn’t. SO it’s def upgraded its safety levels lol.
You can’t really do that without infustructure to support it. Israel recently got in the news for doing essentially this.
So its not immediately making it into training data, that takes a while and there’s numerous filters to try to prevent this from happening. You can still do it but you or me are not going to do that.
What we can kind of do is if enough people agree to make nonsensical posts on reddit for example the ai will pick it up as fact. It doesnt always work, you kind of have to pick a unique sentence or they will try to autocorrect you and say “oh did you mean this event?” But it has been done before and any llm that uses the internet to search for info easily gets tricked by this. This is what Israel was doing, but they have numerous ai news outlets that generate fake articles that all say the same thing, and bots similar sentiments on social media platforms.
Also the gaurd rails you are refering to are just seperate lesser llm that scans your chat before it passes it to the main model. But much like the main model you can trick the filter into bypassing whatever gaurdrails by just rewording your sentence or asking it to pretend its a game. You seem to be conflating this with intelligence or like the LLM is improving. Those guard rails will be tweaked when money is finally needed because money is always more important over saftey. And there are no laws to prevent them from doing otherwise only public backlash. The model itself isn’t safe.
chatgpt is NOT a therapist, dude
get away from that shit
I speed typed when i asked it this but it’s more reassurance these are about friendship closure : https://chatgpt.com/share/6a7797a5-826c-83ea-9ae2-71eb154a481f https://chatgpt.com/share/6a779808-c740-83ea-bfba-05261d5eb306
