I’m not sure how else this should be handled. I don’t like Newsom, and Kirk was a piece of shit who I disagree with as hard as I can disagree with anyone, but I’m frankly pretty surprised and disappointed by the responses I’m seeing here on Lemmy. This is the only social media I interact with, and I had hoped for better. I’m not trying to preach or condescend, but that’s genuinely how I feel.

I realize this is a super controversial thing to say right now but: violence is bad, even if you hate the victim. I hate this victim, and I’m still disgusted that he was killed.

You are the one who is in the wrong. (IMO of course)
This is a classical problem of tolerating intolerance. Continuing on that path, and USA will be a dictatorship within 3 years.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance

You claim the extreme should be treated with tolerance, and that’s exactly what the paradox of tolerance tells us will only increase intolerance, and in this case increase the power of the extreme right and fascism in USA.

I don’t tolerate intolerance, and I would never suggest that it should be tolerated. I also don’t tolerate violence against anyone, let alone glorify it, and I don’t find those postures to be in tension at all.

Then what should realistically be done about the intolerant when they enforce their intolerance on others (i.e. what people like Kirk are doing)?

There is no justice or actual punishment for evil people in the world anymore. The reaction to Kirk is the same as the billionaires who died in Oceangate or the CEO’s who have been gunned down this past year. People know that these upper classes view themselves as untouchable, and so i would say celebrating their deaths is understandable. Kirk celebrated the deaths of countless minorities over the years. The only ones who benefit from your pearl clutching are fascists.

So what were all supposed to how and scrape ‘ah yeah; it was a bad thing. Ah yeah, he was a great person and we should continue his work to honor his legacy’? Fuck that. He was a piece of shit, I’m glad he’s gone.

How much is dear Gavin posting about idk, the numerous school shootings? Or whatever else. No, he platforms this fash garbage and now someone took out the trash. Is violence wrong? Yeah. But the alt right have been perpetrating violence for a while now, and I’m not sad about Kirk getting shot.
