I don’t know how to check the exacts, but I don’t feel like it’s been too bad. The plasma-meta changes are luckily just whether it should pull in extra packages, so getting rid of it doesn’t require any compiling.

Though I am compiling systemd right now cuz I am a and steam needs 32bit.

It was easy. But I’ve installed arch a handful of times, and gentoo twice, one of them somewhat recently. The handbook was good.

I chose a desktop/systemd profile as stage3, cuz I was thinking of installing something like niri or sway. And so I paid the price in having to download 104 packages when I upgraded to a kde profile. Which didn’t include the 200-some packages kde-plasma/plasma-meta needs. Somehow a terminal and file manager are not part of those 200 packages.

Anyways, I like the USE format. I chose systemd-networkd for networking since it’s a desktop connected through ethernet, so I really don’t need all of NetworkManager when a 5 line config file can do it, and so I could set -networkmanager to stop it from being pulled in. I also set -firewall on kde-plasma/plasma-meta because I don’t care for UFW and a graphical interface, and installed nftables and built my own instead.

Update: I got rid of two of them. But the third needs either of the qdbus or widgets USE flags removed on dev-qt/qttools, and both of those also change whether their respective libraries get built, and other packages need those libraries, so I can’t get rid of it. Great job gentoo devs.

I just know I don’t have that much energy and should get something that might do a bit of that for me, especially for the stuff that I don’t care about. That’s why I was thinking about debian.
