No. MY car ain’t sending shit. MY car is a 2004 Nissan which was built before all that BS started getting included in every facet of our lives.
b…b…bbut…but CHINESE CARS ARE EVIL and untrustable unlike cars from good countries which would never betray us! Ban Chinese cars!!!
well yes, it’s why I have a Chinese car, they don’t share my data with my government who are the ones that may want to hurt me.
This stuff is why I’m apprehensive of buying anything remotely new.
The problem is, I also don’t want to burn prehistoric forests to travel.
So this sits in opposition to the fact that I want to travel around using the light from the sun as my primary energy source.
For those that can’t read between the lines, I want an EV, that I can charge by solar.
I am also aware of the slate truck. I have thoughts on it, but it’s worthy of consideration.
How realistic this is really depends on the individual, but converting dead ICE vehicles to EV is a thing. Easier on some cars than others, but old body on frame stuff is pretty darn straightforward (not to mention cool). Early 2000’s Ford Ranger + around 10k USD and maybe a hundred hours of tinkering would get you a ride imo both cooler and more practical than anything you can buy off the lot
What the fuck isn’t? Doesn’t even need to be connected to your WiFi. Devices can have cellular modems built into them now.
Cupra and VW in Australia offer no connected services, it’s by far the biggest complaint from their users :).
Toyota similarly, but they had a recall for a software upgrade recently so you needed to take it back in for a day Of course they maybe recording stuff and then do data dump when you get it serviced
My bicycle does not
I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my biiiiiiiiiiiiiike!
Not yet.
e-bikes. Bet they already do lol. So many people believe the “e” stands for “electric”, but it actually stands for “enshitification”
Not my 20-year-old car.
Without regulation, this will continue, and get worse. Remember to vote in every election you can, both local, and national.
I love my '93 excel. Just about manual everything.
Democrats aren’t campaigning on this stuff so I’m not sure how voting is going to help this particular issue. They don’t seem to care about it much.
Like this: Vote GOP and they won’t so much as listen to their constituency. Vote Dem and there’s some possibility that calls, letters, etc will get them to do something that favors their constituency. Voting is the first step. Making yourself heard, and being an ongoing nuisance about it is the second step. And you better believe that the conservative constituents are doing both steps. Democracy IS a Verb, in fact it’s a Gerund, it’s an ongoing process.
So, like 7-Up, then.
What does voting have to do with anything?
If you were paying attention about automobile privacy, you would known that democrats signed legislation into law in 2024 that requires all cars sold in the US to have driver monitoring software.

Partisan politics mean squat in the privacy sphere.
they squat on*
ftfy 🥲
Are you sure about that? OnStar has been a thing since what? The 90s?
It’s not OEM, though. Those idiot consumers only have themselves to blame.
Maybe the OG versions, but GM put onstar in basically every vehicle they made by like the mid 2000s.
Fair enough. I’ve not looked at GM in decades. 🤷🏼♂️
Yes, but voting was over in 2024. People just haven’t gotten the memo.
Had anyone published a guide on how to strip these sensors yet?
Yes there’s a YouTube video for various disable techniques via fuses or jumper wire kits. Such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e09Kjj2awG0
Thanks, but that guy doesn’t sound like he knows what he was talking about.
He literally admitted that he had to get “information” from grok, and he never fact checked it.
There was no attempt to find or disable cameras, microphones, seat pressure sensors, etc. Those cars he “disabled” are probably still collecting all of the data and storing it locally. Just waiting for a dealer to plug it in to upload everything.
We really need just one person with car hacking skills to document how to disable the sensors (and then do a forensic analysis to confirm the data is no longer being collected). Then we’ll all have at least one privacy car.
It was an example, there are deeper dive videos also, and links to kits to buy that bypasses the units but tells the car things are still fine. Agreed we do nerd better hacking, but then Auto companies would sue
Right to repair prevents these sorts of law suits
But that’s only for companies selling the hacking as a paid service. There is zero standing to sue a guy hacking his own car and providing the info for free on the Internet (or, eg, at defcon).
Only thing they can do is void your warranty
They will claim decryption of proprietary code or something that violates Digital Rights Controls
You could just pull out the LTE/IoT module, and disconnect the service…
Whether that will have major down sides for the usability of the vehicle is the big question.
No, that won’t work.
Instead it will just store all the data locally and then upload it once it gets the airgap broken when the mechanic plugs it in.
The only safe solution here is to remove the sensors that collect the data. But I haven’t yet found aftermarket guides on how to do this with any major new car.
YouTube for disabling on various models. Data removal is another issue
Thanks, but that guy doesn’t sound like he knows what he was talking about.

Indeed, how do we remove this too :(. Crazy how many hoops we have to jump on things we “own”
I really hope the Slate truck is everything they say it will be. Its lack of spyware is a pretty compelling reason to buy one.
My biggest concern with it is Bezos’ involvement.
I looked it up now, slate truck. Seems like a good idea. I never cared for infotainment at all.
I do, but only in the aspect of using Android auto/Apple carplay…
Anything else available from the infotainment system is usually just to facilitate that connection for me.
I already have everything on my phone, why do I also need it on my dash?
My thoughts exactly.
Same here. I wish Canada had a company making something similar since I’d rather not support the US economy. Choose your poison, I guess.
Mexico is making something similar. But it has max speed of like 50
That makes it pretty useless. Sometimes you need to go on highways or between cities. Is it 50 miles or 50 kilometers?
Kph. It’s a great little EV for the city of Mexico.
And they really need it. The cars running on fossil fuels there destroy the air quality
Sus that it’s another bezos company
He’s an investor, I’m not sure how big of a stake he has and I wish he didn’t have one but I’m happy to have an option to not be surveilled by my own vehicle.
No shit, we’ve always known this? I just can’t figure out how to stop it.
We are all shocked
Completely astounded.
Who could have thought that a paying customer would become the product they’re selling to someone else.
:|
(/s if that’s not blatantly obvious)
Big Tech companies think they have solved advertising with infinite data. According to them, privacy can go fuck itself.
The irony is, you can try and advertise but I stopped paying attention a long time ago. Besides, I’m too busy spending all my money on living, fuel, and food. Good Luck Have Fun. And my cars are all over 20 years old. GG
“Sharing” implies something much less predatory than the actual relationship.
Let me go bring a gun to a bank and see if they’d like to share any of their money with me.
What they’re doing is more akin to rerouting the bank’s funds to your account, and buying off your choice of those in gov’t to make your rapidly growing scam “legal”. 😅
I have a 2010 Mazda Pickup. It doesn’t even share with me.
Your B-Series is F to M trans (Ford to Mazda). We all know what’s under that sexy hood.
Rust, so much rust.
My car is doing no such thing, but it’s a manual that’s old enough to vote.
Don’t worry. The surveillance cameras are making up for that gap in the data.
rigs up ultrabright IR light arrays to Subaru
An arms race it is then!
