Conventionally, transition expenses are usually paid by corporate donations (bribes). He promised not to do that and rely on fundraising.
The campaign said the money will be used primarily for recruiting and retaining during the transition period as the administration takes shape.
Basically he doesn’t have a budget to work with until Jan 1, 2026. This money covers the operational costs of forming the new mayoral staff.
But doesn’t his job start Jan 1? Why would he start spending before he is in office?
The transition team of a politician is usually funded by lobbyists and mega donors and can cost tens of millions of dollars. Mandami has rejected funds from these sources so his transition is being crowed sourced and that is big news because that means he’s not owed by lobbyists.
It’s cool that he does this, but overall seems like a weird system. Presumably, this transition period is needed to prepare for the start of his new job, shouldn’t there just be a budget in place so that politicians don’t rely on either bribes or donations to fund it?
Mamdani could write that into law; but he has so much resting on him; he needs that team in place in advance.
Yes there should, pretty much everything about the American system is fucked beyond belief. He’s doing really good things within the confines of that system so far though, hopefully it continues
Our system is corrupted from top to bottom. A good majority of our problems are due to relying on big money in politics. It’s a system that gatekeeps people with ethics from succeeding.

Those folks need to get paid for their work.
The way I understand it, a mayor is supposed to just… appoint people to places when they take office. But they need to find those people somehow, and that somehow costs money.
It costs money to search linked in? He needs a million dollars to hire a recruiter?
I have no idea, how about you look it up and report back? Given that other mayors were spending as much or more than that, clearly the process costs a pretty penny.

In the us commas are the thousands separator not the decimal. The number is 12,000 or 12 thousand. The one point the article that said “12,00” is a mistake where they left off the trailing zero.
I remember the first time I learned that this was not universal; I was in my late teens and installing a set of fancy Italian speakers where that precision mattered quite a bit. I feel like maybe that should be at least a mention in math class here in America.
