“Salted” liquorice isn’t actually salted. It’s far worse than that (from some perspectives, NOT MINE!).
It’s also my absolute favourite candy on the face of the planet, especially the “doppel zoot” stuff that is further coated with the crystals of “salt”.
And somehow, ammonium chloride (salmiak) is less unhealthy than the licorice root extract which is the staple of sweet (european, as opposed to that US stuff that isn’t licorice at all) licorice.
Yeah, eating too much liquorice can cause your body to shut down organs. There was a case I heard of where a person ate a pound and a half of liquorice every day and died from it.
To me this is more an argument in favour of, you know, moderation. Booze will kill you in those quantities too, but I still drink…
Oh definitely. For me, the good thing about licorice is that it’s one of the few sweets or snacks where I’m actually satisfied after a couple of pieces, unless it’s very sweet. When I open a package of chocolate, cookies or gummies, I almost always overeat.

Open a bag of pralines and half the bag is gone before it’s even set on the table.
Open a box of Salmiakki and I have two, maybe three pieces—enjoying them thoroughly!—before “OK, that’s enough”.
