Lifting. I used to deride weightlifters as athletes whose “sport is lifting heavy objects, then putting them back down”. Then on the advice and tutelage of a former student I started doing it to break me out of a depressive funk post-COVID lockdowns.

Best thing I ever did for my health, mental and physical both.

A little different, but I used to hate roller coasters. Not sure when my turning point was but now I’ve ridden over 200 unique coasters at parks all over the US (even plan my vacations around them) and have shared this love with my three-year-old who was ridden a dozen unique coasters herself in the past year.

The worst thing about rollercoasters is going to a place with good rollercoasters and then standing in line for half an hour.

I love lifting, but cardio can die in a fire (except for cycling: which is why I cycle a big chunk of my commute home each day).

You really do feel better after a session, and knowing you are doing something actually healthy helps too :P

Oh I hate it, pretty solely because my arthritis affects my legs and then my asthma likes to kick in whenever I try to push myself a little. I can still exercise but not to the degree I’d want to.

I think i still dislike it, I do it because i feel a drive to do it and guilt if I don’t but I can’t say I particularly enjoy the actual event.

Breasts. I didn’t think I wanted them, in fact I was a bit apprehensive about the possibility. But now that I’ve been on HRT for a while, and grew a pair yes! I love boobs more please!!!

Used to be extremely dubious of sushi, especially rolls with roe. I tried a tiny bite of a roll with roe once and was so proud of myself for being brave and then didn’t try it again for years. Then I went with some friends to a buffet place that had sushi and gave it another try with a whole variety of rolls. I had been overthinking it and getting in my own head, and decided to just ask myself “is my mouth happy?” Yes, yes it was very happy, I’m now a total convert and sushi is one of our favorite options for a special night out.

I’m dubious of most sushi. I like the core of it: the rice, the special vinegar concoction, the nori, etc. And there’s quite a few sushi fillings I loved to the point of learning how to make them.

But I will not eat raw flesh. Period. That’s a hard no right there. And roe just has an off-putting texture to me, like kidney has such for me too. Even if it tastes nice, the texture makes my skin crawl in both cases.

But the sushi without the raw flesh? Yeah, that’s yummy!

Getting tattoos and piercings … when I was little my Mum talked about how getting needles stuck in you was silly and very painful, and tattoos would mean you couldn’t get a job, nobody would respect you, they’d look horrible when I was older, etc etc.

I fucking love my tattoos, wish I’d started getting them when I was much younger. On Saturday me and my wife are going to get booked in for matching tatts to celebrate our 10 year anniversary :-)

Dates! As in the dried fruit thingy. I stayed away from them for years because they didn’t look appetizing to child me. Apparently I like a lot of the stuff mom is hooked on.

Salted licorice. I love salty snacks and I love licorice, but somehow it didn’t seem like salt + licorice would be a good combo. I was wrong!

“Salted” liquorice isn’t actually salted. It’s far worse than that (from some perspectives, NOT MINE!).

It’s also my absolute favourite candy on the face of the planet, especially the “doppel zoot” stuff that is further coated with the crystals of “salt”.

      It's actually...

      ammonium chloride

And somehow, ammonium chloride (salmiak) is less unhealthy than the licorice root extract which is the staple of sweet (european, as opposed to that US stuff that isn’t licorice at all) licorice.

Yeah, eating too much liquorice can cause your body to shut down organs. There was a case I heard of where a person ate a pound and a half of liquorice every day and died from it.

To me this is more an argument in favour of, you know, moderation. Booze will kill you in those quantities too, but I still drink…

Oh definitely. For me, the good thing about licorice is that it’s one of the few sweets or snacks where I’m actually satisfied after a couple of pieces, unless it’s very sweet. When I open a package of chocolate, cookies or gummies, I almost always overeat.

              THAT’S IT EXACTLY FOR ME!!!

Open a bag of pralines and half the bag is gone before it’s even set on the table.

Open a box of Salmiakki and I have two, maybe three pieces—enjoying them thoroughly!—before “OK, that’s enough”.

              It’s amazing stuff!
