Yeah. If it’s one person they’ll either find a procedural reason to never give them the mic, or let them speak and ignore them, but if there’s a significant showing of groups of people they start finding any excuse to sic the cops on a few
I’m not saying you don’t have correct analysis or anything, but that just hasn’t been my experience in my local area and telling me otherwise won’t change that.
People I’ve met do hate AI, at least the people that aren’t like, PMC bootlickers (and as you say, it’s more because of the economic threat or concerns about water, than just abt slop, that was reductive), and consequently many hate datacenters, for enabling AI and causing the water threat.
They hate them in theory at least… But the one actual datacenter proposal in my immediate area I’m aware of has not yet seen anywhere near the kind of pushback that the large scale datacenters in other areas have.
And I haven’t seen it flow the other way yet, where someone is radicalized about datacenters and then learns about AI or Flock and hates it because it caused the datacenters. That may be just because there haven’t been any widely publicized datacenter buildouts in my local area since this started to become a widely known issue, but that’s what I mean about it being abstract. Datacenters two states away can be used to harm people here in my neighborhood. Flock cameras are right there on the pole, feeding data to the cop down the road. AI is shitting up our feeds and our workplaces.
Police repression based on mass surveillance is not an abstract issue here. I’ve been observed by police drones personally more than once, many people I know are harassed by the police based on surveillance cameras in targeted and overpoliced areas, and ALPR is clearly being used to make that all worse. And that’s not to mention corporate and quasi-public entities also harnessing mass surveillance to police people.
I think this comment has it right and rather than being nitpicky with people’s wording, we should let people call it what they want, and focus on making it clear to everyone that whether or not it’s Flock brand its mass surveillance all the same and should be treated the same. Once the data exists it will be used just like flock is regardless of if it was designed to be an ALPR or not, the push is towards centralized systems like axon fusus which are honestly worse than flock.
That seems pretty backwards to me honestly
for the average person the datacenter hate is pretty abstract:
“maybe a company will build a life-ruining industrial facility in my backyard just to power their slop and surveillance systems and my local government will do nothing to protect my health and quiet enjoyment rights”
vs with mass video surveillance it’s more like: “I was already being watched in public most of the time but now it’s being expanded into my very neighborhood and streamlined with AI and cops are using it to more effectively do petty harassment, stalking, etc.” which people are already familiar with and at least know someone it’s happened to, not to mention all the big brother fantasies it evokes.
Both struggles are closely linked and more powerful together, but in my area I haven’t seen the causal relationship go that way.
It’s petty and stupid and mostly useless but honestly I’m in favor of this, and it should include FM too.

I’m a stalwart nicotine hater personally, never even tried it because I would probably like it too much, like other stimulants, but I have to admit like 90% of my IRL comrades smoke cigs and that shit has had an impact on my view of smoking. Its not exactly cool, and I still feel bad because I know and see that it’s hurting them (and me a little) in the long run, but I’m not gonna pretend there’s nothing aesthetically/vibe wise pleasing about it (which is the legacy of decades advertising and astroturfing but… it worked I guess). Once in a while it makes me wish I could still smoke weed or something on the reg and be a normal functional human, just so I’d have something too when everyone’s smoking.
Vapes do not have that cool factor, but I guess can be good harm reduction. zyns are even more boring and gross. unfortunately that is probably a lot of what prevents my comrades from switching. plus the whole industrial manufacturing situation vs cigs which you can roll your own (kind of a false dichotomy since the rolling tobacco is also quite processed… but that seems to be a factor for people)

In this case I don’t think the “joke”/threat is necessarily that Israel has booby trapped starlink terminals, but more along the lines of reddit libs thinking that posting the tiananmen square 1989 copy pasta will get a random Chinese citizen arrested for wrongthink or whatever. Iran tracked down all the rogue starlink terminals operating in the country and presumably jailed or killed a lot of the spies and terrorists they found by doing so, so clearly in the imperialists eyes they are afraid of starlink and/or will be suspected of being a spy for mere proximity to it.
