As far as I’m aware Hutt Space also used Republic Credits. But I’ll concede that it is also a time-space location that I don’t know enough about. (Hubristic enough to have speculated on though.)

From historical precedent: yes.
All people need to have something hold worth as currency is the knowledge that it can be used somewhere vaguely useful. A nearby interstellar state/society means that anyone who goes off world would use it, which in turn means anyone who lives/deal with a major settlement would be fine with it.
Roman and Imperial Chinese coins ended up being used as currency half a continent away (and were all devalued well below face value or already fiat) at much of their given value throughout (and even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is the world more volatile now or is it just the abundance of news?English
1·20 days agoIt’s not that it’s more volatile, but that the volatility is coming closer to home (and 24 hour news amplifies it).
South America is at its most peaceful in about 100 years, South East Asia currently only has 1 war ongoing, while slightly up from 0 in 2010, is still lower than most of the last 100 years.
Africa is more stable overall and developing better for most people, with some exceptions.
Although if you mean volatile as “the US is no longer sure it can curbstomp any likely military opposition”, then yes. That is now true due to other nations’ improvement, and changes to asymmetrical warfare capabilities.
Only parts of southern China, and parts of Korea eat dog. (Might be some other regions I’m unaware of. More freaky, and looked down on for it by the rest of China is Guangdong’s eating of monkey brains).

2·28 days agoDragonfly - touching-harrowing tale of loneliness in modern Britain, touching on social care, foster systems, and classism.
气球 - a film that manages to go from “oh, maybe Tibetan sexual ideas are more progressive than Han China” to “all traditional beliefs are patriarchal and harmful to women and should be overturned” in 100 minutes. Some great shots and use of reflection, and the near documentary style of cinematography makes for an interesting experience, and it’s nice to hear a lot of Tibetan. But the narrative, perhaps due to political concerns is ultimately more of a love letter to Chinese Modernity (set in the near past because the present is always as perfect as possible) than an exploration or ode to Tibetan culture/modernisation.
Wasn’t expecting Kamigawa Vs. Ikoria to feel like the weakest of the 3 sets of the year going in.
Officially micro-hyped for them here.
The proof though, as ever, lives in the gameplay so we’ll see how it goes. But as pure aesthetic, they all look good.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why did/does Oman not raise a stink about Iran also closing their half of the strait?English
11·1 month agoI think the reporters at [House of Saud](https:// houseofsaud.com) mentioned that Oman had been consulted by Iran near the start of the conflict, and Iran’s stated goal is Oman and Iran together control shipping through the strait.
Equally though, Oman has been pretty content to sit back and not draw the ire of either side which is sensible enough too. Besides, for a smaller Middle Eastern nation it’s not as if its government openly supporting either side would win it much favour.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•About what people are talking to each other nowadaysEnglish
5·1 month agoLLMs tend to be synchophantic and can’t judge or give feedback effectively.
Plus they can fail at tasks as simple as telling me how many kids Queen Victoria had.
They never hold their own line, but cave and bow. Which in turn makes the one inputting to it weaker.

6·2 months agoTo add for others, electrons orbiting is a convenient assumption - really they’re more a delocalised cloud of negative charge that exists in various bits of space known as “orbitals”.
Not orbiting in the way we’d understand it from planets.
Capitalists have capital, which they invest in legislative capture to create a more favourable environment for capital.
It’s capitalism unrestricted, since there is no restriction on what capital can do once enough has been accumulated.

But the EU would like to continue to benefit from US military power and espionage while getting to pretend it is more moral. If the EU were to more overtly break with the US it would have to dramatically reformulate its neo-colonial economics.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What can be done to prevent more dangerous heatwaves in Europe?English
1·2 months agoYes, they should.
Trumo’s threat to impose new, higher, tariffs on EU for starting to legislate against US tech monopolies and support local startups show how it would go.
But better to put it forwards under the chicken taco and make headway, and then future US leaders (if any) would have to make open moves against environmental measures.

It’s certainly possible for it to be that if you dealt with people deemed verborten by the Republic that it could be frozen, or just transaction denied - so Watto perhaps risked losing all of it for his normal business practices… But I don’t think anything like that was ever mentioned in any of the Star Wars, and it is also a physical currency too (at least sometimes).
