I have a half-baked theory that right wingers’ sense of aesthetics is more bound up in signifiers, compared to the aesthetic sense the rest of us have. That right wingers are more concerned with status symbols, and less concerned with anything the rest of us might describe as beauty, form, line, balance, etc.
Consider the gilded plastic crap stuck to the walls of the oval office, for example. Or “Mar-a-Lago face,” the purpose of which seems to be to demonstrate that surgery has definitely been performed. Or the now-commonplace oversized (or multiplied) American flag stuck up just anywhere and everywhere. The gigantic pickup trucks with unmarred bedliners.
The “On This Day” short embedded in the article is, although technically impressive in many respects, weirdly soul-less, strangely eerie, probably broadly unappealing. But it is full of signifiers. The flag going up the pole, the men shouting the names of their homes, the plan communicated to the men with a minimum of talking. Gosh, what strong men of deeds not words, eh? “We’ve raised the flag, sir,” we might expect one to report, with a tear in his eye.
Maybe the notion here isn’t that good movies will be made exactly this way. Maybe the notion is that the MAGA crowd will absolutely chow down on a plate of cheaply produced shit, if it’s got enough flags and rifles and shouting in it.
I can’t believe the guy who made Pi and Requiem for a Dream is a part of this.
I’ve been thinking about this myself, how certain - shallow - ignorant by choice - people perceive, how they decide what they like.
You mention Mar-A-Lago face but I often thought more broadly how they perceive beauty or how they are attracted to other people.
Or music, that’s another big one to me.
There’s a few signifiers, as you said, and that’s what makes them like or dislike things. E.g.: “oh, it’s got that 80s sound, so you like 80s stuff?” - “That’s not why I listen to this, can’t you hear beyond that, how perfect this is?” or red lips or full breasts (or 6-pack) being more important than, idk, the overall beauty of the whole person.
