I used to tease my SO for saying “it is what it is.” I’d look back at her and ask “what is it?” and she’d say “what it is.” And I’d nod and carry on. Eventually she stopped saying it.

Thought-terminating cliche. I just wanted to write those 3 words because I’m so proud it’s one of very few facts I have in my brain & is easily retrievable without any research or strain.
We know a few people that use this pithy phrase. I completely agree that the saying is sort of a cop-out. Accepting the situation (presumably), whatever it is, without seeking a better or more palatable solution. It isn’t always a serious issue, but certainly don’t capitulate if it is.
It’s the common retort of middle managers whenever subordinates complain about upper management. God forbid that you actually advocate for change, much easier to just keep your head down and accept a managerial paycheck.
