More than 552 GW of utility-scale solar and wind projects have been announced, or are already under development, across the Mediterranean.

    I think it’s good news but the article seems quite biased and putting an overly positive spin on what’s going on. It reads more like a press release than an actual news article.

    The article mentions this investment will bring the capacity up to about 1/3 of the energy usage. That to me is stretching the meaning of “powerhouse”. Powerhouse strongly implies that the Mediterranean would become a net exporter of renewable energy. Instead this level of investment is just a step on the way to decarbonise the power supply of the region.

    There is also one quote about fears that Spain is sliding backwards due to fears after the energy blackout. This is a real fear but it is dismissed in the next sentence and we’re back to positive spin.

    It’s great that there is this level of investment going on, but this reads like a propaganda fluff piece rather than an actual news article. Worth noting Euronews is owned by Alpaca Capital, an investment fund that is purportedly controlled by allies of Viktor Orban; the former prime minister of Hungary. It also has investments in renewable solar energy in the Mediterranean. So I wonder if this is more about Alpaca’s investments in solar than it is actual news?

      Reducing carbon emissions is one major driver of renewable energy imo, and a second is decentralization of energy consumption. We don’t need ‘powerhouses’ that sell energy to others. We just need to make sure that the production of solar cells and other tech isn’t carbon intensive because it relies on fossil fuels such as in China.
