But I also like the idea of roving bands of top tier athletes just going town to town and relentlessly annihilating every team of random people they meet, because it seems funny.

The Olympics are a scourge of traveling marauders who force each town to produce a team of “athletes” to compete with them in each sport.
It’s not violent (if the towns produce each team…) but it’s just hours of local townspeople getting rudely bullied, just utterly clowned in every sport imaginable by a rotating cast of bored exceptionally talented jerks.
I like the idea about being bullied for not being very good at throwing hammers or riding a horse while it does tricks.

Sports were huge in the USSR, I am pro-recreational sports, it is too expensive for adult leagues now
