Hard to say. I know a guy in the Navy who was having to apply for a loan from his credit union to pay the bills this month. Tough to turn down “free” money.
There’s a guy in my town who works at a federal prison who is doing gig work on the weekends because the government cut the retention bonuses they had been getting for years due to staffing shortages.
The prison jobs are some of the highest paying in this area with solid benefits, but some people will always live at the edge of their means. Dude probably has a mortgage, a boat payment, an RV payment, an ATV payment and child support. I guess he just thought he’d get an $38k/yr for forever.
The actual take home pay is pretty low unless you are living in the base it is not really enough to support a family on. It isnlt enough to manage severe ptsd also in most cases
I was operating under the assumption that most of these guys are already used to short term loans. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it makes them love Trump but they also know that it’s going to cause them problems that fall into the “unknown unknowns” quadrant of the Rumsfeld compass.
This guy in particular is definitely not pro-Trump, he got hit with the double whammy of being broke and having a military dad. Tried to convince him not to but he wouldn’t bend. He hasn’t bought any Cameros yet tho!

I’m sorry how the fuck does someone get all these benefits and is still living paycheck to paycheck
Some people buy the Camaro before they get their arm blown off by a gernade
Americans are not taught how to manage their finances, and I imagine this to be even more true for people who join the military.

Tbf the cost to fill the hole in your soul that that job forms is basically infinite
If you have a soul.

Doesn’t live on base so he still has to pay rent
