Let’s give some love to authors from Asia! Share your favourite Asian author and mention at least one book from them you’d recommend.
– Sorry for the spam there is one more –
Ken Liu, but his family immigrated to the USA when he was 11, so I’m not sure that counts? He does a lot of translations for Chinese scifi authors including Three Body Problem. I do have all of his Dandelion Dynasty books, but I haven’t started them yet.
I am a big fan of his short stories and I would recommend Hidden Girl and other stories. There are a few in that book that are loosely tied together and it was made into a tv show called Pantheon, which was great!
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories is another great collection of short stories. I first listened to the title story on the LeVar Burton Reads podcast, then bought the book. My favorite story was The Literomancer, which was so moving I couldn’t read anything for a few days. Good Hunting from that collection was also an episode of Love, Death, & Robots.
Khaled Hosseini (start with the Kite Runner of course)
My knowledge of Asian authors is pretty limited, but I’ll go for Haruki Murakami.
I’d recommend pretty much anything of his. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is one of my favourites though.
Musashi Miyamoto: I first read Go Rin No Sho (Book of Five Rings) at 7 years old. It’s always been a favorite of mine as I find his philosophy quite meaningful and practical in everyday life. I highly encourage the read.
Others:
Sun Tzu: The Art of War
Laozi (Lao Tzu): Tao Te Ching
Rumiko Takahashi
My favorite works of hers: Ranma 1/2 Mason Ikoku Inu Yasha
Cixin liu and the three body problem
Sorry, but he’s a shithead. He tends to simp for the authoritarian aspects of the Chinese government, and the books are written to show that only tough authoritarians can make the hard but necessary decisions for humanity. The third book is basically “women are too weak for the task”.
It’s a fun story to read for the imagination behind it, but its themes should go in the wood chipper.
I agree. It’s not a moral compass just an interesting story for the scifi concepts
