Donald Trump told a private gathering of donors last year that he once sought to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from attacking Ukraine by threatening to “bomb the sh*t out of Moscow” in retaliation, according to audio provided to CNN.
The Ukraine thing sounds like pure bullshit (who believes Trump actually gives a shit one way or the other)
The Beijing one might be real, although I imagine the actual response from the Xi or whoever he was speaking to would be like “Ok. Let’s see how that goes for you when I do the same to Washington DC.”
Does he think he’s speaking to, I dunno, a country that can’t retaliate in kind and destroy the entire US if the US tries to destroy them? The fact is if China really wanted to “invade” Taiwan today there’s not much the US can do about it without triggering a war that would ultimately leave at least the US and mostly likely China, and thus the world, a nuclear wasteland. For what? Some ideological bullshit from Nazis assmad that the communists won the civil war in China? Let it fucking go. Holy fuck.
(Also, I don’t believe China has any plans at all to take Taiwan back “soon.” One day, maybe. But like I said, if they wanted to do it they could just do it. The fact they don’t serves as enough evidence for me that the US state dept is full of shit as usual)
It’s not just ideological bullshit. Taiwan is a load bearing geographical and geopolitical location central to The Burger Reich’s ability to project force in and to control Asia.
Well let me clarify my usage of bullshit. That’s all bullshit as in “The USA has no right and should hold no belief that it has the right to project force anywhere beyond its internationally recognized borders. Especially not halfway across the globe.” That belief is definitely an ideology among the US ruling elite.
The reference to right wingers still being mad over communists winning in China was mostly meant to be mocking and a little jab/reminder that the guy the west picked to win lost.
I didn’t intend to imply the entire reason the US/west is obsessed with Taiwan is solely due to the communists winning. There are very real underlying reasons for keeping things how they are as you outlined. It’s just fun to remind the hogs that they lost in a dismissive way.
The US keeps saying China wants to take back Taiwan, often by playing up the ocean disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines and their military buildup, but I honestly just think it’s an excuse to build up for the future war they want against China after Iran (or instead? Not sure which they want to do first).
The military advancements just seem like an obvious response to the provocations by the US. The ocean dispute things I don’t really know. That might just be a China nationalism L lol. Or to stop themselves from being encircled by US allies and proxies?
I’m always suspicious of those types of polls, BUT even if I accept at face value that the majority of Taiwanese would like to keep the status quo (which was the majority last I checked) that’s still not the way the US government always tries to sell it. Or the article writers at least. My understanding is the majority on the island don’t want either direct Chinese nor direct US control over them at this time. They benefit most from being in the middle of the feuding large countries with both trying to sway them. Of course given propaganda, the right wing history of the governments the island has had since Kai-Shek fled there in defeat, and like 70 solid years or US influence in various degrees on the island I don’t find it all that surprising that they prefer things remaining as they are.
I was mostly referring to the US military and government falling into shambles though, btw. China can simply stand back and wait until the US has collapsed more, as it seems all recent admins are trying to do. Once the US can no longer project power across the pacific to Taiwan, Papa China will be right there to step in. No military takeover necessary. I highly doubt Xi would want to do a military takeover anyway. It’s not really a wise move, imo, by any government to ever go in with a military and hold some place. That’s an absolute guarantee for insurgency to breed, and if their goal is to hold indefinitely and fully reintegrate the island into China as a whole, then willing assimilation is absolutely the correct path

Hot take maybe but I think all china has to do with Taiwan is wait
I don’t think that’s a hot take at all. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what they’re doing.
“When your enemy is shooting himself in the head repeatedly, just wait.”
Missing chapter from The Art of War
The opinion polls are moving in the opposite direction from my admittedly brief and cursory research
I don’t know shit about Taiwan
But eventually the Chinese value proposition will be overwhelmingly superior and I think they’ll just rejoin willingly
