apparently hooters has a kids menu. I biden-alert after learning this fact, trying to figure out any scenario in which a child enters the breasturant. i guess i don’t know enough about straight male US culture, but i thought hooterinos was for divorced dads and for like bowling teams of middle aged dudes and such… apparently you can take your kid there so they can eat nuggets and ketchup while dad has an erection looking at university students’ gahonkas

I get that Hooters is framing things in a male-gazey way but if it’s OK to take a child to the beach it’s probably mostly OK to take them to Hooters. At least in terms of attire. Unless Hooters has some weird shit the hosts gotta’ do that I’m unaware of.

maybe i don’t really “get” hööters because i’ve never been and don’t know anyone who’s been and lived most of my life in hooter-free countries, but i thought the point of it was it’s a sports bar-type place where dudes can get horny and eat junk food and drink beers. it’s not like a family restaurant, right?

i don’t have a problem with kids seeing bodies or skimpy clothing, but more with kids being in horny spaces

        • these places like to pretend they are not what they are, to cast a wider net with the blurred boundaries. but only fools and the willing are fooled. in the US we have several coyly-sexualized places. restaurants like Hooters and that haircut place “Knockouts”, though I am sure there are more.

some guys would take their kids to strip clubs if under 18 wasn’t forbidden. they would say the human body is natural and nothing to be ashamed of while they pay some 19 year old in lingerie (with bruises and a 40 year old coke dealing pimp) to grind on their athletic shorts as the kid eats bacon from the listeria-infested breakfast bar.

the hospitality industry here is insane across the board and harbors merchants of misery who will pander to the most unscrupulous weirdo with money, if allowed.

dudes who bring their young kids to sexualized hospitality joints in a capitalist country rife with worker exploitation are absolutely on one, and they always have eye rolling explanation for why they do it.

Looking at pictures of the restaurants online because I think I’ve maybe been in one once in my life and I can’t even remember that. They range from really normal-looking bar-restaurants tomore dude-bar-y so I don’t know.

And before some mod-adjacent sancho tries to cancel my ass: I oppose Hooters existing and I oppose femboy Hooters existing, which is a more socially progressive stance than half of the treatlers on the site.

Once you get past the uniforms, it is just a regular place. I remember going there with my parents for no other reason than they were hungry and it was the only place open in the area at the time. I was uncomfortable, because of its reputation and my puritanical hangups as a kid (despite being raised Catholic). But like, genuinely with all the casinos and bars my mom frequented, it really was just about grabbing food and a beer.

And if you have issues about people objectifying waitstaff, I have some bad news about the service industry as a whole. The horror stories seem about equal in their frequency.

Yeah Hooters gets away with so much of what they do (did?) thanks to the fact that women in almost any service industry role are treated the same if not worse, but with the thin veneer of modesty.
