“They had a meeting this morning,” Trump told reporters, declining to say to whom he was referring. “It doesn’t matter who ‘they’ is. We may reveal it later, but they had meetings this morning, and we’ve been meeting with China.”

China on Thursday said it had not held trade talks with Washington despite repeated comments from the US government suggesting there had been engagement.

“China and the United States have not conducted consultations or negotiations on tariffs, let alone reached an agreement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters at a news briefing, calling reports of such information “fake news”.

He is going to full on fabricate a “deal” (“China caved, they wanted our business, they can’t live without it”), give no details, and then just pretend it didn’t happen. The hogs won’t care.

It’s funny that the foreign ministry spokesman could have just not responded but instead chose to point out this guys a liar

Actually wasn’t “fake news” one of those trumpisms that made it into the common vernacular?

“Fake news” was a real problem of fake articles being posted on Facebook where boomers didn’t have the sense to tell the difference between something fake and something real, then Trump hijacked the term to describe anything that painted him or his policies in a bad light.

The foreign ministry spokesperson statement was early Thursday morning in a press briefing. There were at least 3 different news agencies who asked whether China was it had negotiated with the US. The FM speaks in Mandarin and the translation is open to interpretation. Whether the FM said “fake news” in Mandarin, I am not sure.

After a meeting in the afternoon between Trump and the PM of Norway, a press reporter asked Trump about his negotiations with China. This reporter says “They’re saying that it is ‘fake news’ that trade talks are happening.” I’m not sure who this press reporter is, Trump calls him “Jeff”.

As the other person pointed out, “Fake News” was a term that Trump hijacked to cover up for the fact that maga easily believe fake information. It’s in the same vein as conservatives hijacking “trust the science” to be transphobic or hijacking “my body my choice” to be against vaccinations.

Calling it now Nick Mullen dressed up as a Chinese man in the most absurdly racist way possible and is pretending to be a representative of the Chinese government and the White House thinks he’s the real deal

One of the old regulars at work did something similar.

Came in to work every single day, orders a coffee and ham & cheese toastie. He had a conversation with me. In a dream. Came in the next day to continue a conversation about China that literally did not occur in objective reality. I am the only Chinese person he knows. His family moved him to assisted living not 3 months after this event, apparently he did it with increasing frequency with other people

I considered a possibility that he says that Taiwan is the real Chinese government. It seems too unlikely.

I think it’s more likely that he’s just lying entirely to save face. He realized that China isn’t going to negotiate but the tariffs are hurting the US. So he drops the tariffs and pretends he came to a great deal.

Third possible scenario. He says that he’s negotiating with China. Trump doesn’t lift the tariffs. He says that China won’t come to a deal. US goes into a recession. Trump blames China for the recession.
