I think that Trump is unusually bad, but he’s only an acceleration of conditions that were ongoing. I remember arguing to family that if Biden was elected we’d be getting a worse Trump in the future because Democrats don’t solve problems (sometimes they try but not to the scale the problems exist, other times they actively make it worse). It’s because Democrats are neoliberals who only have access to neoliberal tools, which we on the left already know are not enough. Anyway, this leads to still gradually worsening material conditions, which leads to people running from what they see as the status quo towards either the right or the left. Democrats subsume left energy, and so lots who don’t like them go running towards the right and thus fascism. Plus, we’re still recovering from the Red Scare in the US. I ended up being partly right in that we got Trump again, but he’s just being a worse version of himself lol.

If Kamala were elected, they probably wouldn’t be black bagging people in unmarked vans, but they still would be arresting protesters like this for exercising their first amendment rights, they’d just hide behind the law more instead of being so openly fasc about it. They would be nicer about it and more inclined to fill out the proper paperwork. We know this because feds and local cops helped each other to shut down university protests all the time during the Biden years. She’d also probably set conditions to be worse in the future, like the way Obama did by continuing to grow the intelligence apparatus that we’re now afraid Trump will use to find us all, and the way Biden ended Covid help early without replacing the safety nets people still needed with anything else.
