71·11 days agoI’m amazed at how many parents, including ones of my generation [millenials], are afraid of ADHD medication. Especially considering the volume of research on ADHD and the effectiveness of stimulants that has come out since the 90’s.
“But it will change little Timmy’s personality.”
Yeah, that’s hyperactivity. Not his personality. People don’t normally act like the Looney Toons Tazmanian Devil on crack.
“But he might become dependent on it.”
And i’m sure people with missing limbs spend a lot of time worrying about becoming dependent on prosthetics. You know what you should really be concerned about him becoming dependent on? Drugs and alcohol. Because self-medicating is real and the statistics are not in Timmy’s favor.
Fair.

Technology@lemmy.world•Research: The whole Reddit has become more negative over time. Also, the longer the community exists, the more negative it get — and the longer a comment thread continues, the more negative it becomesEnglish
191·12 days agoThe article was interesting but your title is a little misleading, OP. They were not singling out Reddit. Merely using it as an example in their study on why social media threads tend to skew towards negativity over time. It was about human psychology more than any specific social media platform.

2·2 months agoThis is one of the best descriptions of the “AI Economy” that I’ve heard so far.
“Seeking a construction foreman to join our hammer powered construction crew.”
“Seeking a surgeon or join our scalpal powered surgical team.”
“Seeking CPA to join our Excel powered accounting firm.”
This is how these kind of job postings look to actual candidates.
More like an [adjacent to the] shit post.

PC Handyman: “Well it was running slow so I greased it.”
I wish that were not a true story.

Should have splurged on the Curtis-Mathes console. TV, Record Player, Casette, and 8-Track all in one.
If they still sold refrigerators in harvest gold, my wife would be working overtime on talking me into buying one.
Not as much as I used to, sadly. I don’t remember what the first thing I volunteered for was but I suspect I started doing it because I was asked. I volunteered a lot more when I worked at a company that encouraged community service and would give their employees time to do volunteer work during business hours.

My grandparents were not wealthy people. They were products of the Great Depression. They kept nearly everything they ever and bought and every major purchase was carefully calculated.
I only ever saw my grandad wear one watch. A Timex from probably the late 1980’s. I would guess it cost < $20 new at Walmart back then.
It still works. I usually only wear it for special occasions. I’ve spent way more than it’s value having jewelers maintain it over the last 25 years.
I still miss the old man. You can’t put a price tag on those memories.
