Some people see the naked girl railing lines on the couch and think, “oh dear I hope she’s SAFE, I hope she learns self control”. I see someone that I can sit there on molly with for the next hour while she trauma dumps and I’m like “damn girl that is seriously crazy you’ve been through so much, damn, that’s life though right??”

  • I would argue it’s normalizing.

For fucks sake, the last 30 years have been insane, especially with the dotcom boom and bust.

Suddenly every dipshit adult was telling their kids, “computers are the future, the internet is the future, and you can’t survive with just a highschool degree. You better go to college and learn programming!!”

Those parents are a bit to blame with how things got. And it seemed like they were pretty accurate too as high speed internet became huge, and lithium batteries thus mobile phones…

I always was interested in programming, since before my mom pushed me into it, because she was one of those types too. Then I went to college, and I met a bunch of teenagers who said, “uhhh I don’t know what I want to do but I want it make money so I’m doing computer science”.

The first year of college usually filtered those people out. Usually.

And i’ve always said, don’t join this career for the money. It’s not worth it, if you don’t love engineering. This is the most stressful fucking job I’ve ever had, and there are tons of meetings and social activity to go with it. You can’t just solve puzzles in a vacuum, even if you like programming, and that’s EVEN if you enjoy it. You have to start leading others at some point, act like a mentor.

You take on a fucking lot of responsibility, start giving demos, working with product managers, marketers, help teach people what is possible in the product and what isn’t. This isn’t a chill gig. It rarely is. It usually involves a fuck ton of effort and planning.

You get paid a lot… But honestly, if you’re actually doing the job well, you’re underpaid even then. Often you will be underpaid compared to the effort you put in. Especially now.

Not as many people should be in software engineering as there are. I talk to people sometimes and you can tell they hate this job. It’s okay, and I don’t blame them, but way too many people got sucked into this career for the wrong reasons, then kinda now have to keep doing it to survive.

I’m glad I still enjoy it but I see a lot of fucking burnout right now. But I have to say, the people leaving the job now, some of them, not all but some, might be some of the types that shouldn’t have jumped into it in the first place. Lots of people were told they’re smart and good with computers so should make money doing it.

Some of those smart people should’ve done other smart jobs. Biotech is huge too, but I don’t see the drive to it like there was for making fucking websites.

  • I do think now and then there is a similar conspiracy, but I’ve started to realize that a lot of the people making these decisions are acting on very short term rewards, just like any asshole with a bag of chips that he wants to eat.

People generally want the good happy thing now, while they see it and know it’s ready for the taking. They don’t think about tomorrow. Corporate people at best think of this quarter’s profits, and how they can make this quarter look good. The quarter after is next quarter’s problem.

So the people selling shovels during the gold rush are laughing their ass off that everyone wants to dig holes, and producing as many shovels as they can to get as much money now as possible.

They will hire people to build more shovels, invest in equipment to increase supply, but not too much. Just enough to make more money now. Competition might come later, and that’s next year’s problem. Right now, they want to capitalize on a good situation as they see it.

I really don’t think they’re thinking so far ahead that they want to prevent people from owning personal computers. They know they don’t have enough pull to make decisions like that. If their market decisions right now lead to that, they don’t care and they will do it anyway, whatever makes more money now.

They would likely see that as a loss of customers too, not as centralizing power. Right now they just can’t meet consumer demand but they don’t give a shit about individuals, just that they’re making more money now than ever.

But now and then, I do think there’s weird evil fucking conspiracies run by corporations, but you should look at who lobbies government the most when you consider that. Tobacco industry, fossil fuel industry, big pharma. They do evil long term shit.

RAM developers, probably not yet, but AI, definitely.

  • Some people are super fucking dumb and even cause problems.

One trick - managers don’t often want to get actual work either. They’re lazy fucks half the time. When you actually work and raise serious issues to them, you give them work, work where they know they have to do something or it’s bad.

But if you kinda slide by too and quietly handle shit and give them thumbs up every conversation like “all good boss, already took out the garbage too”, they will fucking love you.

It’s really that easy. Don’t give them extra work, which means actually do your job visibly so people see you get something done, but also don’t take it more serious than your boss so they don’t know have to worry about shit they don’t want to worry about.

I have made the mistake many times of trying to tackle big issues when the boss doesn’t want the extra work, and it’s easiest to just lie and say everything is fine, and do what you can to put out fires yourself.

On the software side, I noticed a bunch of alarms going off and broken shit… Then I realized no one was actually looking at this but me. Sometimes my problem is I am the only person who cares about this shit and I have to know to stfu. I literally have an easier time when I care less about broken software, rather than point out how fucked some things are.
