  • bc someone might still be dependent on certain services that he or she wasnt able to replace just yet.

Also: “perfect” is a the arch-enemy of “good”. Every bit of de-americanization, de-corporatification counts, and comments like yours somewhat disencourage people to even begin the journey. Bc “why even degoogle my OS, if I cant degoogle from that one since particular service 🤷”. It’s the same reason some people are not fighting climate change. Why care for my CO2 emission, if India or China wont budge?" We wont score perfect, so I wont even try."

That concept is called Practical Utilitarism

  • Interesting. Never thought about it this way.

First thing to come to my mind: logograms. &, %, +, @. They are quite similar to Kanji. They each have different “readings”, like “&”, which can be “et”, but also “and” or “und” or “y”, depending on the kontext of the reader. So it is not phonetical, but defined pictorally.

Also, maybe Onomatopoesia? Buzz. Hiss. Sizzle. Pop. Slurp. Tick-tock. But I think that does not really meet your criteria.

Or concepts like a U-turn, T-shirt, V-neck, A-frame. They use the shape of a letter as a descriptive element.

And the last thing that comes to my mind would be zigzag (GER: Zickzack). It kind of depicts a broken, alternating line. It’s not really fully visual, but the reduplication and the harsh contrast of syllables try to immitate a stark alternation.

Maybe “synaesthesia” is a distant topic that might interest you, although it is a very broad field. Visual concepts may be distantly related to phonetic concepts and vice versa.

  • I am usually very happy when I see European nations do well. The thing with poland however is that many Poles I know (including half of my family) are very nationalistic right wingers, for their very own reason. I cant even be mad about it, since they where stripped off their statehood over and over again in the last hundreds of years. Anyway, they hate Germany, and they hate the EU project. Despite the fact that the town they live in was basically lifted out of poverty. Out of a decaying ghetto-standard, into a fully developed upper class village with blooming parcs, illuminated waterfountains and more ice-cream-vendors than bars. All of that with funds provided by the European Union. Funds that have been contributed by the “richer” half of the EU - e.g. Germany, France, etc. 🙄 Now many say that Poland will become a small economic powerhouse in the future. Awesome! But will they then contribute to the EU the same way Germany or France do? Or will they call the EU a parasitic enemy that just wants to steal all the hard-earned zloty? Macron is right when he says that Europe is mortal. Let’s hope for the best.

  • Globalization should not be deamonized, but that does not imply that it is wise for us to go “all the way”. Some essential industries like automotive, chemistry/pharma, etc. maybe shouldn’t have been been allowed to outsource everything. Or at least there could have been some restrictions, like “no outsourcing to autocratic countries”.

But as always, money rules the world. And the small man is only happy if goods are cheap. I can’t even be mad at China for taking advantage of that. It’s brilliant. I’m just disappointed with all of the West.
