  • It is more than that. In previous studies from the authors they have controlled for the nutritional content and the processing and found that the content itself, so carbs fats etc, have a certain amount of causal influence on health, but the processing also has a separate and significant effect. Just having less processing seems to have a meaningful effect. This means less of the additives like milk powder, xanthan gum, sweeteners, flavourings, extracts, and so on. The exact mechanism seems to vary depending on the specific case, but separating components of food and then remixing them as well as adding non food components and processing with heat and pressure seems to make these things no longer digestible and safe.

  • Sex is indeed a spectrum. Intersex presentation makes up a meaningful though small percentage, somewhere around the 0.05% range. If it were a binary there would be two options, mutually exclusive. This is a bimodal distribution, with two very strong peaks for XX or XY karyotype and a bunch of variation around either different karyotypes, XXY etc, or differing activation or expression of those karyotypes, eg androgen insensitivity etc.

On top of that, what would you say sex is exactly? Which gamete is larger? In seahorses the males have the smaller gametes but the females use something very similar to a penis to deposit the egg into the male who then raises it and performs all the roles we associate with females in humans.

Is it based on which chroonosomes? In some animals it is a WZ or W karyotypes, so that can’t be it. In others it is just a presence or absence of a sex chromosome. In some plants they have more than two sets of everything, like strawberries with 7 copies of each chromosome. In others they have one, two, or four in some parts of the life cycle, but sometimes the thing we see is the higher number, sometimes it is the lower number. Some have a mix of male and female parts, having sperm and egg producers on the same plant but separated, some have both right next to each other in groupings. Some animals can undergo sex changing due to environmental factors.

Nothing in biology is as simple as the models we use to represent them. Sex is complex and while it sometimes seems simple that is the less common state. Genes are not often all the way on or all the way off, they are usually moderated and running at different levels across the organism cell by cell, and changing with time. The same goes for traits.

I would recommend learning more about ut biology if you really do believe sex is a simple binary. The world of biology is far more complex and varied than that idea can capture and honestly it is fascinating, I find it extremely exciting to find the examples of my own ignorance, they are usually super cool. Good luck!

  • Honestly chances are he was not all he appeared. Many people who are abusive appear nice at first then once they have power they start pushing boundaries and seeing what they can get away with. Once they get away with something they push the boundary a little further until years have passed and they can do whatever they want without consequence.

Add in narcissistic behaviours and someone can seem amazing, very kind and gentle, and wonderfully intelligent and capable while actually being none of those things. It is entirely possible he was conning the entire time, telling you stories of his life that were untrue, distorted, and extremely favourable to him.

Have a think about stories he has told you. See if you can find inconsistencies, places where facts don’t line up. If he was telling the truth everything would line up well, but if it doesn’t line up really well he was lying. If it lines up fairly well he may or may not have been lying but we can’t know.

An example is my partner’s mother was a narcissistic abuser who made some really obviously false claims. He said he was a geography teacher but it came out later he was working for a school but not teaching, he was the groundskeeper. This on it’s own would not be enough to be sure he was a deceptive person but it became part of a pattern. He lied about money, he lied about achievements, he cheated, he abused the kids, and he became more and more violent over the years. Now he lives in a rural area as a real estate agent, using his charm to sell houses for more than they are worth. I guess he found his calling?

Dr Ramani has a great YouTube channel about narcissism and if your ex is not a narcissist then nothing there will sound familiar. Maybe give it a look.

  • I would recommend looking for sources that scratch that learning itch independently of your doctors and other staff. Podcasts are a great option and can really deepen and broaden your knowledge without requiring lucky exposure to patients with a given issue.

One podcast family is the microbe.tv group, shows like This Week in Virology, Immune, and This Week in Paracitism.

I would also recommend This Podcast Will Kill You, this one is really fun and has very good deep dives into awesome medical topics.

Once you have your own educational material you can make your decision with no specific tie to your workplace for getting your education.

  • Yoghurt with berries can be a good option if the berries are soft, so stewing strawberries and pears can work well.

Gnocchi can be slightly overcooked and can be dimply pressed against the roof of the mouth, no chewing needed.

Protein shakes are awesome, add a little heavy cream and they are filling and tasty.

Congee (essentially thick rice soup) is great, it has very soft meat with no chewing needed and lots of flavour and texture depending on what you add.

Lots of French desserts are good like Crème Brulé, along with things like custard, mousse, and even sticky date pudding. The chewing is optional, the tongue is more than strong enough for these, and adding something like cream can help them smooth out and soften a bit.

Egg in various forms including egg drop soup, boiled egg mashed in a cup with butter, and added raw to rice while the rice is very hot can make for some easy but delicious options.

  • OK so I can definitely see why it would seem pointless or really narrow, but I think this would have actually been very helpful for me and people like me. I have dyspraxia, a coordination disability. Mine is specifically graphomotor, meaning the exact types of movements involved in writing. My handwriting was absolutely terrible, causing pain in my hands (I also had incomplete hand dominance, so yay, both hands sucked equally), inability to express in a written form, and difficulty with tasks like painting, drawing, sewing, and cooking. Over the years the most helpful things were gaining strength and switching to printing only, no running writing at all.

If this tool could help with increasing the feedback from my hands to my brain and also push my fingers through the shapes of letters I think I would have had some benefit. I think people who have had a stroke may also potentially benefit, though obviously it would need thorough testing.

  • To clarify, the charges brought in the Florida district could have been brought in another venue, but the crime was the documents being withheld in Florida, so that is the correct venue. It could have gotten way through the process and been appealed due to incorrect venue and we would have been back at the start.

That said, I think getting Cannon removed would have been more likely to bear fruit. She had clear evidence of bias and would have been way past the threshold of appearance of impropriety, so getting her removed would have been a fairly likely path to success. Unfortunately the supreme court was so flooded by idealogues that it would have been appealed and they would have either held it up or overturned it and gotten her back on, or just dismissed the case in some other way.

What was needed was a much more aggressive approach from both Biden and Garland. Biden to change the number of supreme court justices and to direct his justice department to deeply investigate all of the justices on the court. Garland to open said investigations, push for intelligence agency support, and lots of speaking indictments to get information in front of voters.

  • Yep, and along the way to remind you strategically that McDonalds is an option at times that you are considering what to eat. And to better tie you to a single profile to predict and then modify your behaviour. It would also be handy to do per person surge/demand pricing, making the prices of items dynamically shift to what you will tolerate.

  • This requires capital to do and the traits that drive having capital in the first place under capitalism also drive making capitalist structures to get more capital. It takes acting against your interests in capitalism to make a co-op.

That said, as a group a bunch of people could invest equally and have a fair amount of capital, especially with access to business loans. The key problem here is accessing finance and legal structures. The structure of an LLC is not really ideal for a co-op as it assumes individual ownership not group ownership. This can be worked through in a few ways but it is always a workaround, just something to make it work in the current system. The ideal would be some sort of shared, maybe creative commons, legal frameworks written up and cross checked by a bunch of lawyers. I think it could be done and very successful, but making that structure would require input from a bunch of people with experience with co-op structures. That said, once it is done they can all benefit for future endeavours and so can anyone else.

The other issue is culture. The USA has a culture of avoiding interdependence and being very individualistic. This is great for atomising workers and preventing unions, so it is encouraged from all capitalist sources including western media such as film and TV but also in things like which books are published and which are passed on. Nobody wants to produce media that will result in their own loss of financial wellbeing or status. Finding a way of shifting the culture is definitely a hard and currently unsolved problem.

  • I think he is saying that of the total interactions he gets he would expect a large amount of hostility to his opinion on Mastodon, and it is also a small population which is available to interact with on platform. Consistent, just talking about the experience and an objective measure. In my opinion Mastodon will be helped by Bluesky adding a paid membership. The worse it is the better for Mastodon, and honestly if people have already started moving out from Twitter to Bluesky they are not locked in yet so moving out again is easier, they already dropped Twitter but Bluesky is not solidified yet.
