  • With respect, this is a short-sighted take. There’s literally no legitimate crime that is made worse because a person tried to avoid it being detected. Plot a murder over tor? Not a good look. But in what universe is someone less morally culpable because they just posted on craigslist?

On the other hand, allowing the use of encryption or other privacy methods to affect the criminality or punishment assigned to an action just creates a backdoor to criminalizing privacy itself. Allowing that serves no real purpose in deterring folks from hurting others, but it sure does further the interests of an oppressive or authoritarian regime.

  • I am in fact suggesting that one could choose to do injectables from raws. There’s every indication that raws themselves are shelf stable if stored properly and the learning curve is quite shallow, particularly if you’re doing terminal heat sterilization. The numbers I’ve read give a lifetime of ~5 years for prepared vials and indicate that the rubber stoppers are the weak point, but if you’re preparing your own vials, that’s sort of irrelevant. It takes maybe an hour to prep a vial, which if you’re doing 10ml of estradiol enanthate at 50mg/ml, will last most people at least a year at a sane dosage.

Given the fact that many places are literally sliding daily into fascism, I see no other viable way than DIY for folks to ensure their supply going forward and injectables are the cheapest way to do that (and are likely much better for your health than oral, which is what almost every doctor will start you on). The exact price was not my point- those I imagine will be changing somewhat daily given the state of things. I was mostly just letting OP know that she does not have to be subject to waiting lists or hoops to jump through if she doesn’t want to.

I think the point you’re missing is that without the monetary incentive that arises under capitalism, there would be very little drive for anyone to build these wasteful AI systems. It’s difficult to imagine a group of people voluntarily amassing and then using the resources necessary for “AI” absent the desire to cash in on their investment. So you’re correct that an alternative economic system won’t “magically” make LLMs go away. I think it unlikely, however, that such wasteful nonsense would be used on any meaningful scale absent the perverse incentives of capitalism.

  • I think approaching a situation like yours with kindness doesn’t require breaking the prime directive though. There’s a big difference between “you’re trans and should start transitioning” and “wow, that reminds me of how I felt when I was figuring my gender stuff out.” The former is what a therapist did to me, immediately trying to push medical transition on me the second I mentioned any gender feelings, after which I never saw her again. The latter might have been useful to me in a way that respected my own journey.

Sure, was that therapist “right” in terms of me socially transitioning and starting hormones about a year later? Yeah. But, she was wrong to think it was appropriate to push my timeline and had I listened to her I fear I would have been plagued with doubts that my transness was rooted in that therapist’s opinion rather than my own lived truth.

  • Congratulations! I got my other ear pierced early in my transition (one was already pierced and just needed stretched). The best advice is to leave them the hell alone other than maybe saline solution. If you’re like me, you’re going to want to wear all those cute/dangly earrings you see everywhere now. Resist that urge as best you can. Give it time and let them heal. It can take up to a year for your piercings to fully heal and every time you change your earrings before that process is complete, you add time to the clock.

  • Aside from driving being an activity that, in my opinion, will require something approaching AGI, there are other issues to consider. Self driving cars will be completely unable to make difficult decisions reliably. How, for example, do they deal with a robbery where you just have someone stand in front of the car to immobilize it and then have the folks inside the car at your mercy? I have to imagine that either you’re producing pedestrian murder machines or serving up passengers on a silver platter.
