Do you genuinely believe this is true for even just 10% of gamers? 10% of people? I’m not saying I disagree, I just don’t believe any relevant amount of people give a damn about the purity of art for most things.

Most art the average person interacts with is mainly utilitarian. Marketing and porn is probably like a good 80% by mass. As long as the art does it’s job, I just don’t believe most people give a fucking damn.

To try to come up with an explanation that doesn’t pretend these peoples brain fell out of their heads:

Some people are crafters. For them the process and even the tools around that process are important, maybe even more important than the outcome. It makes sense that they would be wary of AI, to put it mildly.

Other people are builders. For them, all they want is to solve an issue, build a solution, create an art. The way they get there is an implementation detail they don’t care about. They don’t care whether it’s real oil, or digital oil, as long as the oil painting in there head becomes a real thing somehow. It’s understandable why they might at least try to use AI for art.

I’m sorry, but I’m certain that the average AI summary beats/matches what the average person gets from a normal search. You’re acting like people before AI didn’t just believe whatever the first or second link told them, for most cases.

If you’ve ever even read the summary of a study, you’re in the top 10% of “people that research online”.

Same is true for meat. Meat is to nutrition what AI is to intelligence. An extremely wasteful, ultimately unnecessary version with better alternatives.

The main difference for all the complainers is of course that they already don’t use AI. Not using meat would, in contrast, require actual effort beyond moaning and bitching.

If your morals depend on whether it requires personal effort, you’re not moral, you’re a hypocrite.

What is the estimated 34 million in 2030 in percent? What is the impact of non-veganism in the same time? What percentages are we looking at?

Our outrage and effort should be in relation to the negative impact of each problem. Animal AG has a gigantic impact in every sensible metric, and it’s far far far bigger than AI. Be honest, do you think even a fraction of the loudest complainers about AIs resource use are vegan?

Can we really believe people whose morality stops wherever they’d personally need to actually do more than bitch and moan?

I’d love to see any kind of sources on this. From what I can tell animal agriculture emits roughly 20–30× more CO2e than all data centers combined.

We really have literacy crisis on our hands. Their estimates put the industry (if we pretend it’ll not crash and keep growing) at 34 million tonnes of CO2. What percentage of USAs yearly emissions is that? 0,6% of net emissions.

It’s not the animal AG that’s doing it, not the oil industry, and not the car industry. It’s the 0,6% that MAYBE might happen.

I say this not to ignore those things, but to sensitize your valid impulse to fix global climate change issues to the real culprits. Most importantly, I’d like people to adjust their levels of effort and outrage to the actual impacts instead.

• To save 34 million tonnes of CO2e, you need about 5.2 million vegans from now until 2030
• So only 5% of ONLY the complainers would need to go vegan to make up for this “tremendous” impact
• That’s 2% of all americans

This makes no sense. What in the world makes you think that the average junior dev before AI produced perfectly safe code? For both the junior and the AI, the solution is a senior looking over stuff, decent code review cycles, pair programming, maybe a spec and good documentation for especially heinous customer requirements.

I’d actually go so far as to say SOTA models are far more likely to notice these issues and do them right. Seriously, juniors are often lazy, undisciplined, and very scared of asking for help. I say that as someone that’s both been that guy, as well as taught a bunch of those guys.

If there’s an olive branch I can extend, it’s definitely that adding LLM to a disfunctional, badly managed team and/or process won’t improve it. It will just increase the rate of bugs and vulns produced ten fold.

How exactly are you using AI? Are you from 2023? If the AI cannot compile, lint, or type check it’s outputs with deterministic tools, you’re straight up using it wrong. I have a compiler for a reason, I want the AI to use that, not it’s vague memory.

When it comes to missing context, that’s (in most cases) on the developer calling it. It cannot have context that you do not give it. If the hyperspecific reason that module A is built weird (some insane legacy customer request maybe) only lives in the minds and hearts of developers having worked on it 3 years ago, that’s a failure of documentation, not the AI. A human could not have done better. Obviously, there’s limits to everything, but in my personal experience 95% of issues with AI agents would’ve have likely happened with a freshly onboarded human too.

The definition of vibe coding has shifted a bunch of times. I will agree that any non-developer using it for anything even remotely important/dangerous is asking for trouble. But a developer who knows the possible pitfalls can get pretty freaking far.

For me, the biggest fear is that noones educating/hiring juniors anymore. As a senior, that’s job security, but it will still fuck us over once we run out of old people that know what vim is.

As always, the main difference between home cooking and restaurant quality is an irresponsible amount of salt, fat, acid, sugar, and/or heat.

Software developers are used to basically making themselves obsolete, just to then be more productive. Inevitably, it always ends with non-developers not actually wanting to understand the new fancy tool, and developers just now using that new tool to be more productive.

I think with software dev, most current devs with some years of experience will end up fine. It’s the juniors that are fucked, because AI is genuinely better than them in most ways a suit cares about.
