  • I have a Bernina so I can’t speak personally to Singer quality these days. But here are my other thoughts.

I ended up buying a new machine to replace an old Kenmore because even though I had the manual, there was 0 information about the machine online, no help, no videos, nothing. When I ran into a problem getting the zipper foot to work, I had nowhere to turn. The snarky man at the repair shop asked me why I was bothering. (F him, I go to a different shop now.)

Regarding speed, mine has a speed setting. Have you found a speed setting for yours? There probably is one somewhere…

I’m now in my forties and I gotta say, my automatic needle threader is a godsend. I have to manually thread my serger needles and it takes me many minutes to pull off even with my reading glasses on, sigh.

PS your bench cushion looks awesome!

  • I get that. I had already been burned by VW with the TDI scandal, so I was pretty frustrated with car companies in general. Are any of them truly ethical or consumer-focused? We saw that Tesla was at least trying to make the electric car thing work and we wanted to support that movement—not because we think electric cars are the endgame solution, but because we think they’re a step in the right direction and we wanted to encourage the market to follow their lead.

And buying a car is not an investment. It’s not like we own Tesla stock.

One thing I did really, really like about buying a car from Tesla is that they don’t use a dealership model. What a breath of fresh air! I never want to buy from a dealer ever again if I can help it. But I think the next time we’re in the market, we’ll buy used anyway.

  • I’m in a different position financially than where I was six years ago.

Flooding the used Tesla market is not a strategy I had heard before you mentioned it, actually. Maybe if I was in the same position that I was six years ago financially, I would be making different choices. But I’m not.

As for my soul, Lemmy talks a big game about focusing on the class struggle, but whenever I admit to having a Tesla, everyone piles on like I am the worst person ever. I got flat out scammed by VW and I certainly didn’t fucking know that Musk was quite as massive a tool as he has shown himself to be now. Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention. But all I’m saying is that I’m not the real enemy here.

  • Any car is sold at a loss. As someone who recently paid one of these off, I can’t stomach a new car payment in the face of our melting economy because six years ago I didn’t foresee the head of a car company turning out to be a freaking nazi.

Considering my Tesla replaced a VW TDI, I’m feeling particularly salty and completely disillusioned about ethical consumption under capitalism, etc. etc. I wish people on Lemmy could have some empathy and not just assume that everyone driving a Tesla is sanctioning anything that Elon Musk does.

The IT Crowd creator has stated he does not believe trans women are women and that transgender rights oppress women.

I wanted to make some quip about it being typical but actually not all men think this way or assume they know what women think. And I’m sure some women think this way. But it also tells me all I need to know about this tool. Good riddance.

  • I just started using Threadloop. It is almost for sewing what Ravelry is for yarn crafts, which I’ve been longing for forever. I like it so far and is a multi-featured option to replace your pc directories if you don’t like them. You can notate how much of each fabric you have and include pictures, weight, stretch, whether or not you’ve washed it yet… the list goes on. Obviously it would take some time to set up. So far I’m getting by just fine using only the free version but there is a paid version with upgrades.

As for storage, I finally got some of those comic book paperboards and some plastic shirt clips, which allows me to put my fabric on a shelf like books or stack it. It looks way better than what my stash looked like before…

  • My first big frog was a sweater that came out way too small. It turns out that the “worsted” yarn was closer to sport weight. Did I swatch? I don’t remember. I sure do now. Anyway, it took me about five years of it lying around before I thought about repurposing the yarn for another project. The first one was the hardest but now, I come to terms with it a little quicker. I still need to set it aside for some time while I grieve, I guess. I will say though, it’s kind of satisfying to wind it all back up and get some “new” yarn out if it!
