Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Reddit started censoring French protests after bots attempts framing it as all violence rioters failed to sway overseas opinion on redditEnglish
12·3 days agoYeah, I quit for good after comments about Spain and France. I got recommended subs I’ve never seen before and that look like they’ve been made to lure right-wing folks (with some bot comments and obviously framed posts).
It’s a mess, I don’t even know what’s real anymore and I fear it’s the people who are becoming so unloving to each other, and especially to ones who look different.

World News@lemmy.world•Finland, Estonia urge EU to suspend tourist visas for RussiansEnglish
3·12 days agoBureaucracy is a bitch, unfortunately. Sometimes it’s much better, according to immigration “experts” (people who analyze asylum cases and help with all the docs), to arrive as a tourist and try to find a time slot to present the case.

3·12 days agoJust recently a man crossed the border from Kaliningrad to get asylum in Lietuva (not the best option but it was the closest). He got denied and now he’s facing jail time in Russia for his social media posts.
If you have a RIGHT to apply it doesn’t mean you’re gonna get approved. There are some anecdotes for denying Russians asking for asylum (or another type of visa, I don’t recall exactly) for having a criminal record in Russia for the exact thing they were trying to run away from (it’s usually donations or social media posts “discrediting” russian army)!

115·13 days agoThank you for thinking a bit more than a regular reactionist. This ban will hardly help with EU’s “defense”, and it’s certainly not going to make an ordinary Russian angrier at their government because it’s too fucking expensive to go to EU anyway.
Yeah, some middle-class moskali will cry about it a bit, but above everything else it will make leaving Russia for people in danger more difficult. But yeah, it’s gonna give an illusion that EU finally does something decisive for Ukraine (cough-cough, >4.5 years of the invasion).

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What drink tastes awful but somehow people still act like it's amazing?
1·20 days agoNot really, because the process of getting this ethanol can not yield perfect results. I don’t know about other countries but in Russia the actual alcohol used in vodka is tiered like this (worst to best, mostly by impure contents): “Высшей очистки” (of highest purification, not really in use as of today, and refers to the process used in USSR times), “Basis”, “Extra”, “Lux”, and “Alpha”.
Alpha-grade alcohol is also defined to be produced only from wheat, whereas other ones might be made from potato. This achieves lower methanol content in the product.
Still tastes like crap though, no matter the cost. Vodka is a ritual: you need a good company and a table full of different kinds of food to enjoy it.
That’s where “kinda” is about, to be honest. Especially it’s hard to tell if it even works (if the point is really to help people). I agree, freedom of movement and participation in society must not be gated in any way.
Non-nuanced explanation: Top flag - pro-cop. Bottom flag - libertarian, “anti-government”. You can’t be both.

Thanks for the good news, Serbia! And congratulations!
