Quick update if anyone is reading this in future - the upgrade was successful!

Hats off to the HA developers and contributors - even though my install was completely unsupported, the updater pretty much sailed smoothly through everything.

It ended up taking several days to process all the database schema changes, along the way I did need to modify the MySQL InnoDB cache size from 128MiB to 1GiB (not the fault of Home Assistant at all - I didn’t set up MySQL correctly 😂) once that was done things significantly sped up.

Looking forward to all the new features HA has to offer 🙂

I remember a looong while ago when I broke my virtualized install by trying to update with too little virtual disk space, had to expand it and manually install the latest core from a shell within the VM. On another occasion the sqlite database completely filled up the virtual disk (I disabled automatic pruning of old data) and that was a pain to export… eventually dumped it into a dedicated MySQL installation and all was well after that.

I’ve seen that they now have A/B boot (similar to how Android devices do) so hopefully these are issues of the past

Still going 😅 database migration has been running for 21 hours so far lol.

Everything has gone smoothly so far. Spent two hours looking through all the release notes and have a loooong list of stuff to sort out as soon as it completes 🤞

Plain AOSP doesn’t include a dialer/phone app, camera app, or clock app anymore AFAIK, so for me i’d consider base to be AOSP+GApps

I was interested in a steel but they’re hard to come across where I am - most likely going to go with a Bangle.js instead for the always-on screen, long battery life and programmability

I would agree that it’s not necessary - I only really use it when I’m feeling impatient or doing rapid prototyping of small parts 😅

Definitely isn’t good for the bed though, on some occasions I’ve seen pieces of the bed material on printed parts that have been removed this way

Looking forward to this. I don’t run a custom ROM myself but I am rooted, primarily to revoke permissions from Google apps and to back up my OS and app data as I desire.

However I’d much prefer to be able to run something like GrapheneOS on a Pixel if it meant I could run apps that are picky about Safetynet/Play Integrity, such as banking apps and the like

I use the Tubular fork as well, love it, however the dev has life things that slow down how fast fixes get merged in ☹️ in the meantime I either watch Nebula (or use Freetube on my HTPC as a backup, they tend to publish a fixed build ridiculously fast).

My fav Grayjay feature has to be “polycentric” comments on Nebula videos, pretty cool to discuss with other Nebula subscribers seeing as the official app has no social features

In desktop mode there is an easier way for the last part - click the battery icon in the taskbar, then click “temporarily don’t sleep”. Screen brightness can also be set in the same area

No quick solution for turning the screen off though AFAIK…

Deleting documents from insider branch users a few years back, forced installation of HP SMART printer utility, constantly switching users’ default browser back to Edge, even bypassing my employer’s GPO to do so at one point in a Teams update

I don’t know tbh, Windows just doesn’t cut it for me anymore personally, mainly because of Microsoft. Stuck with it on my desktop though because of sim hardware.

I still have XP on an airgapped old PC for nostalgia ☺️

Lying about your age could be a problem in certain scenarios, like say some kind of medical situation, or even if a coworker expresses romantic interest with the belief that your age is something completely different. It’s not ideal, but I would probably suggest to tread carefully with it.

Don’t know the dynamics of your work assignment - however if you trust your manager it might be worth having a quick conversation about it to see if you can at least be put onto tasks that take your body’s condition into consideration.

I would suggest Plex HTPC on the deck instead, since it works really well with the deck’s gamepad in the normal gaming mode. Touch also works but should probably be considered a last resort IMO

I only use Aliexpress via my browser. Was tempted to give Temu a try too but that’s a hard pass from me now

A bunch of first party titles like Gran Turismo and Ratchet & Clank push native 1080p/60, and look pretty damn great especially considering the time period and 512MB (256MB VRAM) limitation.

Install steam. Run in big picture mode. Done. That’s a steam machine. I don’t get what you think a dedicated machine is going to do any differently. There is a reason Steam abandoned the idea themselves.

Big picture mode on my windows PC and the gamescope-focused UI on the Deck look similar, but offer very different capabilities IME.

To name a handful: FSR support for all games - including those that don’t support it, per-game hardware performance profiles, excellent hardware integration - not just limited to the instant sleep and instant wake. With the third party Decky Store you can also configure the fan profile to your liking, control music apps running in the background on the Deck, and more. On the PC BPM these sadly do not exist

I 100% prefer playing on the deck any day of the week - the OS simply makes it so straightforward to jump into a game and forget about needing to also think about maintaining a desktop: no Windows updates, no telemetry service CPU spiking, and no Windows resetting my customized settings or forcing Edge browser defaults after an update.

That said, I don’t particularly have an interest in a full blown Steam Machine - for me the Deck works just fine when docked.

I really want an updated steam controller with the same haptic touchpad tech present on the deck. The original controller, while comfortable, just doesn’t compare to the improvements present on the Deck 😭

I like having options and the versatility personally 😁

The 3.5mm jack can also be used to record video audio with a much better microphone, attach a HW infrared blaster, or use your device as a crude oscilloscope im a pinch with appropriate software

The more common use case is people with existing wired headphones - there’s honestly no need to cast aside perfectly good cans for no reason. Yes USB-C DACs exist, but IMO that’s a completely manufactured expense and inconvenience, considering almost all phones still have the 3.5mm dac and amplifier components physically present on the mainboard: only now you must purchase a dongle to access the output via passthrough, or purchase a third party dongle that includes its own DAC.

My pain point though is the fact that users with wired headphones are now being forced to induce more usage cycles on a single connector port (which is not always economically repairable on modern devices), and all the avoidable e-waste produced by these things when the unreplaceable, consumable batteries give up the ghost after two years of ownership
