My question is: even if EU manages to apply laws for backdooring encryption, wouldn’t cybercriminals just use different tools? They may force Signal to backdoor its encryption, but what about Briar? Will they backdoor the Tor network? Will they ban it entirely? What about Matrix? They can’t prevent offshore encrypted instances.

Are you too used to Cisco devices? Mikrotik routers also have multiple ethernet ports, that are not connected to an internal switch.

People reading about OpenWRT based network devices, probably know about their needs. They are usually already looking for devices with OpenWRT support, without being too expensive.

Also, people not knowing about Lemmy is completely irrelevant on this context. I highly doubt that all friends on the network engineering field know about Lemmy, but they surely know whether they need 10g or not. Besides that, you are talking about people not knowing about Lemmy ON Lemmy.

Will that minipc have those 10g/5g/2.5g ethernet ports? If you don’t need that ethernet bandwidth, we all know there are cheaper options.

The keyword here is “modern”. Some people use older hardware, like DVRs with ancient firmwares.

Most people, nowadays, use cloud services instead of USB sticks, so I guess it’s preferred to focus on supporting legacy devices.

The real problem may be external hard drives. Those are commonly used by media creators. Unless they know that they should format to exFAT when buying, they will learn it when it’s way too late.

I may be on the later category. It was ~15 years ago, and little Jimmy (me) got his first external hard drive. However, he didn’t know about formats, and that he couldn’t copy 4.5GB movies to his new toy.

Back then, it was either 4GB file size limit (FAT32), or it only works on one platform (NTFS, ext2, whatever Apple was using, …)

You could theoretically host a Piped API instance, and use it to get channel info. I guess you are already using your own SSL certificates, judging by what you are trying to accomplish.

We are facing a problem. “Crybabies” are arguing about lack of content and/or difficulty on signing up. People on Lemmy are arguing that they don’t want such users in their communities. Other people, thinking of onboarding, may not join after seeing hostile users like you.

It’s very hard to tell, unless the owners disclose this information. A lot of instances run behind Cloudflare or other proxies to hide the real infrastructure.

I don’t blame them. Leaving your server completely exposed is risky. But Cloudflare is another shady company, so I prefer to take that risk for my servers.

I remember watching a video from Linus demonstrating a WiFi router. I don’t remember if it was WiFi 6 or 7, but any obstacle could cause connection drops.

I don’t know if things have improved since then, but I usually bond WiFi and PowerLine for rooms that Ethernet cannot reach.

Can’t you re-use those emails? I use random email aliases almost everywhere, and I store them in bitwarden.

iirc Windows Defender does a decent job. However, if you are a JavaScript developer, try to add node_modules to the exceptions, unless you don’t care much about the performance hit.

I personally have stopped running antivirus on Windows a couple years ago. Since I run most, if not all, untrusted software in VMs, I didn’t see the point of wasting performance. On the host, I only run Firefox and Steam/Epic games.

I then moved to Linux and I have 2 GPUs; one for the host and one for VMs with games. But that’s probably a different story.
