In my experience, privilege is rarely a factor. In fact, the most privileged people seem to be the most involved in politics because that maintains the status quo in their favor.

People who aren’t interested in politics usually say they’re too occupied with struggling to exist to read about different tax structures, the pros and cons of different immigration policies, or deciphering a local politician’s rhetoric. When faced with an immediate problem, such as a hungry child, and a more distant problem, like an unfavorable tax plan, most people will choose to prioritize the more immediate problem.

Yes, politics is the reason why they struggle. But can you really blame someone for placing a priority on day-to-day existence?

  • Peltier elements suck at heating and cooling.

The problem is efficiency. Of all methods of heating and cooling, Peltier elements are the least efficient at both. The main benefits to Peltier elements are they’re very compact, very simple, and very cheap. In some applications, these benefits are enough to warrant the trade in efficiency. In a greenhouse, these benefits are either not very helpful or completely invalid.

Your money and energy are more efficiently invested in other methods.

For a truly comprehensive explanation from someone much more knowledgeable than I am, refer to the Technology Connections video on the topic.

  • Yes, I’m aware of what the official report says. The FBI only concluded they couldn’t prove any connection to terrorism.

Every mathematician and data analyst the SEC hired to look at the trades said they were indistinguishable from trades made on advance knowledge. Despite this, the SEC concluded in their findings the trade patterns were “coincidence”. To this day, the portions of the report detailing the SEC’s basis for their conclusion remains classified or so heavily redacted as to only offer conclusionary information.

So, the SEC looked at all the evidence indicating advance knowledge, handwaved it, said it didn’t actually mean exactly what the experts said, then provided “trust me bro” as their only source. To me, that’s about as believable as Epstein killing himself. But if that’s good enough to count as proof in your mind, go ahead and believe what you want, no judgment from me.

The only sad thing here is how you treat people you disagree with.

  • If you don’t like right-wing music, don’t listen to it. In the US, people have a right to make whatever art they want; you can’t silence someone just because you don’t like their message. If you think their art sucks, make some art you do like.

The trouble with banning ideas is who gets to decide what’s banned. If you do set up a system of laws that allows control over what music is made, what stops someone in the future from taking control of that system and abusing it?

  • As someone who learned on AD&D 2nd Edition, I gotta say, I find the 5th Edition rule sets (very annoying that there’s two versions. again) painfully slow and tedious to play. The rule set and focus has shifted from large-scale battles with dozens of participants and 3-4 armies to smaller encounters of only two teams and 4-6 participants on each team. Just one large-scale encounter on the 5e rule set would probably take multiple sessions.

The culture and the way people play has also changed dramatically. Pencil, paper, and dice used to be all you need, but is seen as “inadequate” now. Terrain, D&D Beyond, and miniatures are the new standard. Everyone uses a tablet or laptop and browses Reddit between turns. Every turn is treated as an opportunity in the spotlight to have their big moment of the session.

I hate to sound like a boomer, but this new stuff ain’t it.

  • It’s finally gotten to a point where wealth and power are concentrated into a sufficiently small enough group of people they can:

    1. Collectively agree to all do the same thing
    2. All benefit from their cooperative action
    3. Afford to bribe as many officials as it takes to have complete control of any political system of their choosing
    4. Wield enough of the world’s resources that everyone else has no choice but to follow suit
