who is downvoting this? 😂 maybe they live in a poor country, or maybe they’re making an obscure joke. Why would people go past this comment and be like “nope, fuck this person”

With that model the company can afford to offer far more content than with a pay-once model. With a pay-once model they only generate enough income to be able to offer a book, and maybe a smattering of supplementary material. Go subscription-based however, revenue increases, so output increases and now they can afford to create and maintain a whole lot more while keeping the price affordable to those who need it during the period that they need it.
It’s a similar principle to renting vs buying. If they were to offer all of those materials as a one-off purchase at a price that would allow their business to be sustainable, it would cost more than most are able to afford.
If we go back to one-off purchases, we go back to getting less for life as opposed to a lot for a limited period of time. It’s a trade off, and clearly one that most people are willing to make.
People get so angry (OP) about the way things are just because they’re unhappy in general and looking for something to blame. Not all companies are fair with their subscription models, but most are. Not every company cares about their customers, but most do. Some companies are run by sociopaths, but most are run by normal, nice people.
I think this map was made by an American cos it’s referencing cultural things that I don’t know or care about.
the second screen from a design point of view is way more interesting and isn’t just using stock wireframes
oh my god this is incredibly exciting! huge fan of e-ink. I wonder what the refresh rate is and how much impact the tech will have on battery life.
EDIT: should have read top comment 🥲
Holy Jebus, that is the absolute most bleeding edge phone I have ever seen, and it costs less than a Pixel 7a…
But agree with others that the software is a deal breaker. Loading this up with stock android would be a much better experience, but of course with roms there is a price to pay in terms of stability and compatibility.
Sure, if they’re second generation it’s a different story
My wife is Chinese so I lean more in the direction of hating Chinese people 😂 Just kidding I love her to bits.
I get it though… while I was living in China there were so many things I enjoyed about it that I didn’t often complain. But being back in Europe, the aggravation grows.
You can say hating the people for what their government does is stupid, but when the people stand so resolutely by their government the hatred goes in the same direction. Unless you’ve lived there, you won’t understand the long process of indoctrination so you won’t have sympathy for their unthinking obedience.
This seems to be a serious downside to this system. Anyone who values a persistent profile is putting their precious data in the hands of some random instance that may or may not go bust in the near or (perhaps worse) distant future.
I’m on lemmy.world because it’s the most likely to survive
I joined another instance and it closed within 2-3 weeks…
The core issue is soil quality. Without sufficient organic content in the soil, all our food, whether it be plant or meat, has drastically reduced nutritional content meaning we need to consume more for the same effect. We’re heading for a global food shortage because of the one key issue. Healthy soil also sequesters an enormous amount of carbon from the atmosphere. So instead of fighting the beef vs tofu wars, we should be focusing on encouraging agricultural practices that enrich soil rather than destroy it. We have about 50 years of crop cycles left before the majority of arable earth turns to sand.
Shifting your diet to be more plant-based is a good idea, but it’s not the crux of the issue.
I’m all about the side-folders (Z-Fold), the flip folders (Z-Flip) are cool but gimmicky. Never owned one, but probably will one day!
I missed a credit card repayment by 1 day and my score dropped almost 300 points (UK. 800 (very good) -> ~500 (below average))
