TTRPG.network Instance Meta Discussion@ttrpg.network•Tons of bots from this instance
8·2 months agoIt was about 5 or 6 spam bots blasting out lots of spam; probably just someone abusing lemmy/smaller instances. I’ve turned off new account registration for now. Unfortunately the captcha system included in lemmy isn’t the most powerful. If you see any others report em and they’ll be banned

TTRPG.network Instance Meta Discussion@ttrpg.network•What is up with the frequent little outages with ttrpg.network?
2·7 months agofederated content lives on its original server for non-text stuff; Posts and comments federate over, but stuff like images are basically proxied to your current instance. If you go into a post that is from another server and there are images, it will go to TTRPG.network to begin to load, then need to load those resources from the remote instance, so there is a bit of a hop/back-and-forth there. There could be lag between instances that could cause issues.

4·7 months agoCertainly always appreciated. I will continue working with the host; It’s worth noting that things have gotten better than we first migrated. I prepaid for a year with the host because there was a 10% discount vs monthly, so somewhat locked in at the moment (not really locked in, but ya know, sunk costs), so we’ll see where we’re sitting as the year goes on.

11·7 months agoHey there, we swapped to a new host back in December after our old host went out of business. So far the results have been… lackluster. I’ve been reporting to the host when I notice outages, which seem to be reasonably frequent unfortunately.

TTRPG.network Instance Meta Discussion@ttrpg.network•We are up an running on a new host!
2·9 months agoYeah, there was some indexing issues with some of the images when we migrated. Stuff had to be cleaned up, but i think we lost a number of thumbnails with those issues. It should just be mostly thumbnails that were affected of some existing stuff; I’m not aware of way to regenerate thumbnails outside of just uploading a new image.

5·9 months agoyeah, there was some database indexing issues, so we had to reindex it, plus the server needs to catch up on 3~4 days of fediverse activity. Hopefully things should even out. I’m not noticing too much slowness myself, though.

6·10 months agoJust an update: after a few hiccups and a late start, its been chugging along; It’s around 1/3rd of the way done, currently. Didn’t get started until late yesterday, and the process died a few times, but its been running just fine most of today. If i had to guesstimate, it’s probably gotten a good ~12-14 hours of run time to get to this point

3·10 months agothere’s actually great resources for getting started online. There’s a site called start playing games dedicated to matching new people to a DM. Note that services like that cost money. There’s also the virtual tabletop roll20 which has a group finder for you to find a game. It will have a mix of free and paid games. Alternatively, you can crowdsource that such as on r/lfg on reddit (unfortunately the LFGs here on lemmy don’t seem to be active enough to find games), or through various discord servers, including the official D&D discord. Another that has reasonably active LFG type sections to try is the Fantasy grounds (another VTT) discord.
For in person play, you can also look in to local gaming stores that might run adventurer’s league, which is the sort of ‘official’ play wizards of the coast sanctions at local stores and at conventions.

TTRPG.network Instance Meta Discussion@ttrpg.network•An FYI - our host is going out of business
4·11 months agoHopefully it shouldn’t be a big deal. I just need to find a new hosting service, and the migration should be easy. I have some time to figure it out, so I’m not too worried, just gotta find the right service.
They also recently did a reprint of the first ~5 or so books in paperback. One of the neat things they did with the reprints is they’ve included dice rolls at the bottom of every page, so instead of needing to use dice, you can flip to a random page instead and use that as your roll.

possible; If someone is spamming the API it can easily bog things down.
