Obviously people who follow him are massive bell ends, but they still matter and they still vote. America’s democracy is far from perfect, and has definitely struggled to cope over the past few years, but it put him in the most powerful position in the world for four years and despite all the evidence, enough people are still supporting him that a second term still can’t be ruled out.

It beggars belief, it really does, but you really should care about it and a single person being a martyr has historically changed the world.

He’s hardly the first rich American to escape justice if he continues to do so. Rich folk in America have literally gotten away with murder. (OJ for one)

Those fines are insultingly small. But putting him in jail would only make him more of a martyr. The law is still struggling to cope with this man.

Unless you’re the first to post on a new topic that goes on to be popular, then no matter what you say you get read and gain karma. If you comment on something a few hours old, nobody ever reads it.

You’re one voice in a city. Whereas here, we’re a village. Less anonymous, friendlier, easier to get talking to your neighbour.

Totally agree. Really do not want this to become too popular, because then you get bots, fraud, fake news, trolls and shitposting. Being too small to interest those guys is a good thing.

I think you’re missing that point.

If you’re paying to provide a free server, and along comes another server owner who wants to peer with you. Only they’re charging their users for the same thing you’re giving away for free. Why wouldn’t you be a little bit miffed that they want to take your freely-given service and sell it to their users - because that’s what would be happening in that situation.

Monetising something that’s intended to be free is very, very difficult. Not impossible (see open source software and the businesses that grow around that), but it’s a lot harder when it’s a service.

Y’know, I’m starting to think this is a real positive.

I’ve been on reddit for about 12 or 13 years. Quite a heavy user - until I quit it two weeks ago in protest. Small thing but it actually meant a lot to me.

But now I’m realising something: Reddit was actually quite bad for my mental health. The amount of bots and shitposters, and some really toxic mods too (we weren’t all the Angels that we’re being painted like now).

And, on all but the quietest subs, if you don’t get your reply in within the first hour, or even minutes in the busier subs, anything you say gets lost in the churn. Get in first, you get the upvotes. This feeds the karma-cravings of browsing /new to get noticed and that can be very addictive if you’re that way inclined.

All of that badness is exactly because Reddit has achieved critical mass. None of it happens here. The quality is poster is better here. Sure, there’s less of us, but that means we can actually have a decent discussion like now. And also, we kinda care what happens to this system. Most people didn’t care about Reddit as a whole. Maybe their favourite subs, especially if they were mods. But over the past few years I’ve realised how the admins view the users, and it’s not nice.

I won’t be going back to Reddit.

(As for the rest of your point, kinda agree that the world is going to hell. But do please accept that ignoring the bad stuff and not keeping up with the global news cycle is a survival technique for many people.)

About a week since i read or posted on Reddit.

Reading Christian’s rebuttal was genuinely shocking to me and I decided I didn’t want to continue supporting Reddit’s management by being associated with it.

I demodded myself (sole moderator of a 13 year old sub, plus another two smaller ones), deleted all my many thousands of posts and comments and stopped using it.

I’m planning on deleting my 11 year user with a lot of karma on the 1st to join the protest then (I need to revisit to check that’s still happening)
