Just saw the other day that the Pixelfed developer pushed out a new feature pretty quickly and it reminded me of how much faster you can push new features out when you’re working on a small team with very few developers.

Then I realised that… At the place I work at (an app most likely installed on your phone) - well every change will have a huge impact. If 0.05% of the users’ performance is degraded - that’s a shit ton of users. So we have processes in place. We test on all kinds of devices before releasing.

Running a high quality service at scale is hard and it’s expensive and it’s not always fun because you have to leave your cowboy developer guns at home and do the homework before pushing to production.

I spent way too much time trying to understand why I wasn’t taken to the comments when I hit the comment icon…

Yeah, all apps advertise “no algorithms” - well those algorithms are what is pulling users back and back again and the more you get people to open your app - the more likely it is that they’ll contribute something.

I have to remind myself to open Pixelfed. Which is how I want it to be and how it should be. But I also understand that none of my friends will go there and look at nothing and then check in again a day later.

Yeah, and I have a Galaxy Watch 6 and my wife has a Galaxy S23 (not sure if there is any “ecosystem” benefit of us both having Galaxies though…)

I guess I could wait to see what the Pixel 10 has in store but then again - why get a Pixel when you are not going to use what is Pixel about it? I’m in Europe so I don’t get all the smart features of the Pixel - I just get vanilla Android with worse hardware than the competitors. But a nice camera which I like. Haven’t tried the Galaxy camera app in a while!

I’m on a Pixel 7 Pro and was considering moving to S25 Ultra this year but it’s really hard to understand whether it’s a good phone when all impressions are about how similar it is to last year’s model…

And last year’s model was very similar to the model released the year before that.

So essentially it’s not much of an upgrade if the S25 Ultra at large is similar to the S23 Ultra which was available at the time I got my P7P…

I said in my final paragraph that Lemmy is nice but there is so little content here. The communities I frequent here (with very active reddit counterparts) have like a submission every few days. Just check !football@lemmy.world for example.

I’m on Pixel 7 Pro and after this winter (dry hands) I’m leaning towards iPhone. I’m so sick of failing the fingerprint scanner 3-4 times before having to resort to the pin code.

FaceID worked so well on the Pixel 4 XL - why isn’t any Android manufacturer picking it up??

Pff, this has to do with people caring more about their polling numbers than the environment.

Actually saving the environment requires some hard sacrifices and it’s hard to be the elected leader who tells their voters that they’re going to pay more and get less.

But in non-democratic countries you’re right of course.

I think one general benefit of open source is that in general - they are built for the user rather than for the stakeholders.

If Spotify was an open source app - you know for sure you would be able to hide podcasts for example (for people who don’t care about podcasts and just want a music experience). However, since for Spotify The Business it’s better to piss off X% of their users if Y% of their users turn into podcast users - they’re not going care about the angry X%.

So in general - in open source apps you’ll generally find features users actually want and very rarely the app will try to push new features on you because they’re trying to make numbers look good on their quarterly report.

I think it’s very reactionary. A decision like this should be taken through a public referendum and not in panic over Ukraine being invaded.

In addition, I think it’s valuable with neutral countries rather than moving towards a world order where every country is either on USA’s or Russia’s side.

As a Swede (who is opposed to a NATO membership) - I must say what a shit show this has been and an embarrassment for NATO.

I get that if you’re in a military alliance together, you need to not hate eachother but when every country need to ratify your membership it opens up for this kind of situation where a single country can hold an application hostage and try to get whatever they want because they simply don’t like democracy.

European here. Telegram and FB Messenger is used by everyone even for iPhone to iPhone communication.

Most of the aspects have already been covered but I would want to add one:

This was always the plan, it just wasn’t as highly prioritised as growth.

I work as a developer at a big tech company. We (the company) had our roadmap and it was mostly about getting more users. The more users you have the day the economy turns - the better off you are (… If you manage to turn an profit).

So when the economy went to shit and we (and other tech companies) no longer can loan money for free to cover our running expenses - the priorities shift. Working towards attracting more users is only going to increase your costs at the point and you don’t want to run out of money. So all roadmaps changed and cost saving efforts became the highest prio all of the sudden.

You are used to a time where money was essentially free for companies. Whenever they needed money, they could loan money almost for free.

As interest rates are up, that’s no longer the case and priorities have changed from growth to plugging holes.
