4 months agoTrump’s political game works by creating enemies. A virus is too abstract of an enemy, so instead he creates enemies of those adjacent. Fauci, China, WHO, governors of Democratic Party states etc.

Like so many things with Trump, this is a test of loyalty. He makes outlandish requests that rile up his base, and sees who’ll fold. Sean Spicer with crowd sizes, RFK with McDonalds on the plane Photoshoot. And now this with House republicans.
The problem is these dumbfucks haven’t yet figured out that they don’t gain anything by being loyal to Trump. He’ll toss them out sooner or later anyway.
Stupid question from a non-American: Is the intent behind the “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” wording not documented? It’s not like these are words conjured from the ether. People wrote them. Presumably after some discussion and debate.
I’m guessing the amendment as a whole was related to anti-slavery stuff following the civil war. But was there not some understanding at the time as the wider implications of the specific words?
Sure, I guess they can be interpreted however a modern conservative court wants, but why is discussion around the clause so ambiguous as to its origins?

Seriously, buy an AppleTV. It works standalone without the need for other apple products. Has a fast processor, ability to disable telemetry, good track record of software update support etc. and NO.ADS.IN.THE.OPERATING.SYSTEM.
Using an Android box will result in the same issues you’re trying to get away from with SmartTVs.
If you’re technically capable enough you can build your own HTPC, but due to DRM you’re going to run into issues streaming 4K content from streaming services. And PC and Linux HDR and Dolby Vision support is a rabbit hole.
My theory is that the tea party didn’t have much do with a black president. It was around that time that social media really took off, and we saw the start of what is now a constant and organised firehose of conservative bullshit spread across it. And there’s an audience receptive to that bullshit.
The Republican Party is now under the control of people who have been immersed in that environment. And it’s only going to get worse.

I wish we had a way to simulate a universe in which the GOP gets every single one of its policies implemented. Then let it run like a Sim City level. Just to see what a dumpster fire it would be.
They’re addicted to attention. And will do anything to get it.

10·2 years agoSingapore’s public transport system is fantastic. I lived there for 2 years and never felt like I needed a car. You only get one as a status symbol.
Don’t give them any ideas. They’re already complaining about no-fault divorce laws.
I got most of my friends and family using AppleTVs. Every one of them loves it. Even the more hardcore Apple haters admit it’s a solid device.
It’s funny watching people complain all the problems they have with their TVs and here I am thinking “this has been solved problem for over 8 years”.
No UI ads. No tracking. Fluid UI. Dolby Vision. Great remote. Apps for playing back any file you want. Never going back. Get an AppleTV and enjoy using your TV again.
