I think this is a very priveleged take if we actually care about advocating for digital sovereignty.

In a perfect world, sure, build and manage a server with self hosted infrastructure. In reality people care about this stuff rarely actually have the money, time, skills or drive to manage a project like that confidently.

Its normal for people to want to allocate management of their services to a provider with trust to circumvent this.

For actualnconstructive advice to the people who can’t do this: Try looking up to see if their are any nonprofit email hosting services in your country - they exist but usually don’t do marketing and are often built on strong values. If not I really think using services like Tuta, proton, etc is leaps forward for your safety, privacy and ethics compared to Google, Microsoft, etc.

Games when you buy them even if they are in disc format are dubiously licensed and not DRM-free anyway so like I dont get it - do gamers just want the illusion of owning games ?

Im not from the US, so while im an english speaker it looks like I would not be the target for this kind of cultural localisation - but wouldn’t you go to jail for owning an illegal firearm in the US too?

A semantics discussion isnt required to know that to do something responsibly, that it means to act in good faith and to be confidently informed enough to do so. We measure responsibility by the absence of harm.

I could think of of plenty examples, but a good use for pirating would be Disco Elysium - the publishers stole the IP of the creators unjustly, so it would be cobsidered by many ethical to not purchase the game and instead pirate it and donate a comfortable amount to the actual creators patreons. You are actuallu combating theft, in this instance.

But of course it would not be responsible to pirate most indie games

This feels like unecessary absolutism and fear mongeting. I am by no means an AI lover, but people shouldn’t let the worst implimentations of something cloud their judgement.

I feel the question should be “Does this project use AI responsibly?” not “Was AI used?”

Maybe what we should be advocating for is transparency with these decisions?

They are simply pointing out that you judged the trailer for being something it was never expected to be.

Announcement trailers are non-committal by design - it’s the formal declaration of a project without making promises that are too early to make.
