Maybe when Google is (hopefully eventually) shattered into a million pieces by some US judge, YouTube could be splintered into several smaller companies, each with some portion of the infrastructure and channels/videos - thus forcing competition. Vaguely similar to the Bell divestiture.

I’m not well versed in the machinations of the Chinese government, but if a relatively “normie” VPN like Nord works in China… it’s probably controlled opposition (i.e. they’re logging everything to a government server.)

I don’t know about dangerous, but case-insensitive Unicode comparison is annoying, expensive and probably prone to footguns compared to a simple byte-for-byte equality check.

Obviously, it can be done, but I guess Linux devs don’t consider it worthwhile.

(And yes, all modern filesystems support Unicode. Linux stores them as arbitrary bytes, Apple’s HFS uses… some special bullshit, and Windows uses UTF-16.)

Unicode versions (what this is talking about) and encodings are different things.

Encodings kind of by definition don’t really change. Unicode versions add new codepoints (such as emoji.)

Full Unicode text and images is likely all we’ll get, but honestly I never understood the appeal of all the crap they stuff into (say) iMessage.

This is why I can never get into microblogging/Twitter-type platforms. Character limits and one-click reposting mean that what little discourse you get is shallow, and ragebait is consistently pushed to the top.

I’m not going to say that Lemmy or (especially) Reddit completely avoid this, but you generally get much more insightful conversation and can opt-in to political communities.

There was a thread on !asklemmy@lemmy.ml recently asking people for their unpopular political opinions, and it actually wasn’t a total shitshow!

Cloudflare is a proxy, so by its very nature it has to decrypt traffic. (I believe their enterprise plans may offer a way around this, but don’t quote me.)

I wouldn’t worry, however. If someone wanted to attack this site (or any site, really) they’re almost certainly going to have an easier time going after the origin rather than trying to take on a juggernaut like Cloudflare.

Media storage costs seem to be pretty high considering how young this instance is. Are you considering adding a size cap (like some other instances) or another solution like rolling deletes in the future?

If Canada uses the same bands as the rest of NA (and I assume it does) you should be able to get one remailed to you, no?

• On my desktop: GNOME Evolution - but only because my university uses Outlook w/ Exchange (cringe) and the UI is slightly more tolerable than Thunderbird.
• On my phone: I just use the baked-in Samsung Mail app.

In terms of provider, I used to use Gmail for my personal, but got tired of Big G scraping my correspondence. I tried Proton, but its integration story is a complete joke (you can upload your calendar and contacts but there’s no DAV support, their IMAP bridge is a non-standard-compliant dumpster fire that doesn’t work with half the clients I tried…) so I ended up on Fastmail.

The durability issue. I shouldn’t have to rely on “getting lucky” if I want the display to not get a huge crease (or outright break, in the case of OP) - especially considering how expensive these devices are compared to standard phones.

I do already use dark mode (Dark Reader ftw) but for me, any emissive display seems to cause eyestrain over a long enough period. I rarely use the backlight on my e-ink reader, so it reads like crisp print on paper.

Maybe you were using really low-res/first gen e-ink? Or perhaps we’re just built different :p
