I was for disabling down votes the last goaround wrt this topic, and I’m of the same opinion.

LemmyNSFW hasn’t grown much more in the past year and this will just drive away more posters (of which there aren’t much left) imho

Additional - I’d prefer that others block me (so they don’t have to see what I post) or block/don’t subscribe to various communities I mod that they don’t want to see as part of their feed, rather than have them downvote individual top level posts.

Separate from the list(s) published by admins here, I’m also happy to add additional mods to communities I currently mod (see my profile). Please post or comment and leave me the indication that you want to be considered.

As I’ve said before, if anybody can demonstrate that they want to be top mod of any of my communities, I’d be happy to transfer top mod status to you.

I can still see you, your comm and posts, but can’t comment (it just spins). And your comm is no longer in my subscribed list. And if I attempt to subscribe to comm again, no success - it just spins… So mostly good!

I suspect they just lose the ability to comment/vote.

The downvote now only registers within communities you are subscribed to.

The downvote button does show up everywhere though, which may cause some initial confusion (as i was too, but on second thought, makes sense. Now non-subscribed folks can press that downvote button as many times as they want to vent, but these votes won’t register)

Yes, you definitely can ban accounts from community you mod. At the time of the ban, there is a checkbox option (via default browser UI) to also remove all the past crud posted in the community from account you are banning - easy way to do wholesale cleanup rather than having to do one message or one comment at a time.

I think only allowing community members to vote is a reasonable solution. This is similar to political parties and having primaries, so it’s not a radical idea.

If one is not invested in a community and not contributing (in whatever ways), just stay quiet and observe on the sidelines.

If one is invested, then by all means take the time to subscribe and truly help build a community with your engagement (even if just by silent voting).

I’m confident there will be some known trolls and haters who simply like to downvote for the fun of it and they will spitefully subscribe to every imaginable community to demonstrate their “right to downvote”. 😂 Bless them…

It’s now over a week and it seems things generally have improved. A lot more different posters, but niche content and OC have not increased much yet. A lot more postings of popular redgifs links by non-OC reposters.

Just some unscientific observations - based on my own posts into small niche focused communities:

• more people seem to have switched to viewing own subscribed feed.
• not excessive amounts of upvotes, to be expected for small communities and small number of subscribers. I want my niche communities to be small and intimate of mostly interested/engaged subscribers, not just passersbys.
• some haters seem to have started abandoning LemmyNSFW (or blocked me/my comms which is totally good, as that’s the way its supposed to work for stuff one has no interest in seeing)

I hope you’ll read through the post and rest of this thread about the reasonings and temporary nature of this change until we can technically implement a longer term reasonable solution (TBD) to properly reflect your statement

In those cases, please use the Report to alert mods AND admins for ban actions.

Bummers - that what I thought… Reddit finally did something right when they made blocking both ways so that people you have blocked can’t see you.

Question for you and admins here: Does blocking someone work here on LemmyNSFW work the same way now as on Reddit (i.e. they can’t see any your content posts). Previously on Reddit before they made the change, blocking was only one way, which didn’t work well.

But, I did want to vocalise my support as people are more likely to speak up about things to complain which can shift the perspective.
