  • Feels real bad man. A lot of people that voted against this are going to suffer. For perspective 74.9 million people voted for Harris. That’s greater than the entire population of France (68.3 million).

The number of people that didn’t want this is massive. But a few more people in this country did want this so now millions have to suffer.

Maybe the depression this causes will give the US a chance. We seem to only have progressive reform when the economy collapses. When the economy is good voters shift to destroying the system because it’ll “lower their taxes”. Maybe Americans are a lost cause

  • Eroding democracy isn’t an on off switch per se. He’s been actively dismantling systems since day one. It is hard to say exactly when all is lost and there’s no coming back. That could have been last week or it could be next month. I suppose that will be up to historians.

I think frogs in a pot slowly being heated to a boil is a better analogy. We were pretty fucked as soon as we went in the pot. If there’s any sense we can maybe jump out, but eventually we’ll die if we don’t act

  • Yep the system was built on good faith and the idea that at least one of these branches would do better.

If I were to rebuild the system I’d probably push greater power to state legislatures and the people of the state over their congressional representatives. For example say a 2/3rds majority of a state senate can recall a congressman and trigger reelection. Then every state should also have a way for the people directly to trigger recall elections.

Elections for the house and senate also need to occur yearly or every other year. Imagine if 1/4th of senate seats were elected every year.

We need to expand congress. 2 senators per state was for when the US had way less people. Why not bump it up to 3? The house of Representatives could also use another 100+ seats added.

Finally put term limits on the Supreme Court and introduce ranked choice voting.
