It was fashionable at a time to avoid ifs and other imperative structures, but I tend to like them. Functional is nice and all but I like my code to be smart in the way it works, not in the way it’s written. Nested ifs are readable, collapsible, and easy to make sense of at a glance, there’s often nothing wrong with using them.

I’m playing star trucker right now so I’d be golden. Just one year of hauling cargo, customizing my rig and doing the occasional EVA to salvage expensive jetsam. Where do I sign?

It’s a shame cause the idea of a cozy, human-centered place on the modern internet is a sweet proposition in itself. Not everything needs to be a war, and you always have the option of letting go of things you can’t control.

Because of the context. At no point were AI labs mentioned in the story, it is all about these assholes from “pro-ai” spaces who scrape the platform and then brag about it and publicly taunt the Cara admin. You can go see them in their stupid little subreddits and such, they are not shy about it.

Now for the other side of the question : why on earth would an AI company, who is already getting sued left and right for infringement, get into a public spat with the admin of a marginal community ? And for a dozen million images of mixed styles and media, that would barely move the needle of an image gen model. It doesn’t add up.

I find it extremely sad in the Cara situation, because this person is basically getting trolled, and by their own words they are already close to burning out.

The people scraping Cara are not AI companies looking for cheap training data. They are just twitter trolls toying with someone. They are not gonna spend the money and expertise required to use that art to train an AI, at best they’ll make a shitty LoRa which nobody will use because it will have no value. They are not doing it for any nefarious reason other than : 1. it’s cheap, 2. it works (the admin responds with intensity), 3. it is not illegal.

So the Cara admin is gonna compound their own burnout by piloting a crowdfunding campaign that will end up in heartbreak because no honest lawyer will take a case like that. And this will do nothing to advance Cara’s original mission which is to be a social space free from AI slop.

I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Cara ends up closing shop, all because the owner wasn’t clear-headed enough to disengage from internet trolls.

The largest chunks of US bonds are held by nations, so I think the subtext is that if any nation starts dumping bonds to hurt the US economy he may consider it a casus belli. Basically forcing them to hold the bag at gunpoint. This is a dream situation for a conman like him.

That is so bizarre. My dad’s had chicken for as long as I’ve been alive, and doesn’t slaughter them until much later and much bigger. I’ve never heard of them breaking their bones.

It probably depends on the variety, I know my dad is kind of into heirloom and older breeds so that’s probably a factor.

I have a “marble hornets” shirt from back when they released season 1 on DVD. It’s frayed to hell but I still proudly wear it on occasion.

At some point I noticed that she always sounds like she’s talking with clenched teeth, as if she was on speed. Kinda ruined it for me, also her format is kinda lame.

Didn’t know about those other things so… Yikes…

I remember reading this in one of our class books when I was maybe eleven and it damn right fucked me up. I was so moved by the lonesome atmosphere, and I suspect it’s one of the early things that made me so much into post apo a few years later.

Bradbury was a rare voice in classic sci fi, and one of my all time favorites.

It’s amazing to me how fast the executive class jumped on the notion of replacing their workers, although it was obviously too early to know. The idea makes them salivate so much that they showed their hand immediately like children before candy.

I think the class divide will take a long time to recover. Basically every boss in the world declared to the public, including their own employees, how eager they are to just fire the lot of them.

What’s “true AGI”? Why would it need introspection and self awareness? Those are entirely different things. Is persistence necessary to perform cognitive tasks? So someone with ante retrograde amnesia couldn’t be said to be generally intelligent?

Those things are tricky to define and interesting to think about. It’s rather boring to reduce them to broad statements and catch phrases.

I remember 15 years ago being in a club in Acapulco and there was this old Mexican guy just going around with a modified car battery and two handles. He’d offer the handles to you then turn this big knob that controlled the voltage. And then he’d ask for a tip! It was so stupid.

What a strange take. That’s like saying you couldn’t be trotskyist and embrace industry in 1919.

Do they get any listens, tho ? Generating thousands of songs is not quick or cheap, and then if you have to pay for listens i don’t see how that can be profitable. How many of those songs even make the monetization cutoff ?

It’s kind of tinfoil hat but i’ve always suspected this kind of story was covert marketing from Suno themselves. I’m sure they would love to actually make a dent in the music world like that and it would make their investors look real smart. But maybe the real story is that they’ve raised 700 millions and they barely exist in their own industry.

That being said, I hope they get fucked in court again.
