  • Loads of people go on about how “awe shucks, we’re in the Mad Max future, instead of the Star Trek future” completely unaware that Star Trek’s utopia was built on top of the ruins of a Mad Max distopia that came first.

In canon, Star Trek’s utopia only happened after Earth had a nuclear WWIII followed by the Eugenics War (and several related genocides) before first contact with the Vulcans. In fact, without those wars, we might not have gotten the tech for warp drive. In further lore, after the wars of the 21st century and before first contact, there was a concerted “never again” kind of movement globally eventually resulting in the United Earth government being founded. It then took more than a century of technological and societal progress to get to the matter replicator driven post-scarcity economy.

So we could be on track for Star Trek future… but none of us will be alive to see it.

  • Sad to say, but it’s likely some of this bump they’re getting is TYT listeners/viewers leaving after Cenk and Anna’s latest spar with literally everyone near their orbit (and even losing some contributors). Many -oh so many- disaffected MSNBC viewers turned to non-traditional media after 2016, I cannot imagine how many might be leaving for more actually progressive sources after the recent election… but TYT has fumbled the bag here by both attacking other progressives AND doing shit like Charlie Kirk “debates” and interviews with Tucker Carlson.

I really hope they turn the ship around, because going after MAGA die hards isn’t the answer. At any rate, Majority Report seems to be doing just fine so there’s that.

  • because I do not trust big tech.

Dude, same. I mean, I get that’s why many are here, but it’s just gotten so much worse lately.

Starting to build my first Linux machine to use as my daily driver laptop. Been meaning to get into it all for years, but Microsoft’s constant shenanigans as of late and everyone on Lemmy really pushed me to take the plunge.

It’ll be a “baby’s first project” of a used Thinkpad running on Mint, but it’s a start to getting out from under these corporate fucks. Every step away is a step to which I’m not planning to return.

  • We don’t really have evidence of Jesus’ historicity. I mean absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence but, all in all, there’s pretty much zero direct evidence of his existence. Almost nothing that would point to historicity in the gospels is corroborated by archeology… like was Pilot a person who existed? Yes, very likely he was. Is there biographies of him? Yes, there are contemporaneous sources showing him to be real. Is there anything, outside of the gospels, recount him meeting Jesus in any capacity let alone a whole trial and execution? No, there’s nothing like that. The whole scenario of Jesus’ life as chronicled by the gospels doesn’t hold up to scrutiny… sure, some of the people and many of the places do exist, but just because New York exists it doesn’t mean Spiderman is real.

As for the early church, even Paul doesn’t claim to have known a historic Jesus but rather only recounts experiences of visions of Jesus and angels.
