The killer product being the lying machine or the deleting working code machine? I think there’s a small number of people for who these tools really fit into their workflows but they are not universal so there’s limited growth and they’re already wildly unprofitable.

The search term you need is elsagate. A whole bunch of cheaply made youtube videos featuring popular characters in bizarre situations. They were made to game the youtube kids algorithm and tons of tablet kids watched them.

Manifest Destiny is pretty much that. The US fought Mexico, Spain, and British Canada, exploited the political situation in Europe to buy a huge chunk of land from France, and displaced or killed hundreds of thousands of native people. The US is the 4th largest country by area. Having that much contiguous land is insanely valuable and powerful. By the time the US would have even had to think about colonizing like the Europeans it was going out of style.
But also mate which is hot, caffeinated, leaf juice, is a-ok and totally not tea.
I tried for a while fighting in my local facebook groups, but it just served to make me mad and didn’t put a dent in the constant barrage of nonsense. I started blocking them all and finally just stopped using facebook entirely.
It’s sad since those are really the only online groups for my town. I just have no interest in engaging in the local community now.

It’s a form of parasocial relationship. It can trigger the same feelings as if you were in a room with some friends chatting. You get to “know” the people’s personalities, you can anticipate their reactions to things, you get invested in their personal relationships.

And if you overthrew the ruling class, you’d still want to know how the new system was affecting various demographics. All systems have biases and the only way to account for them is to know about them.
These types of figures are still important to know. You want to see if certain populations are being affected disproportionately and have a baseline to work from when seeing how policy changes are working.
If you make a policy change and see recovery overall but you’re still getting 52% of Latinos reporting insecurity, you’ve done something wrong and you have data to back it up.
You’re describing exactly how all these web tools worked. “HTML, CSS, and JS are too hard to do manually. Here’s a shiny new tool that abstracts all that away and lets you get right to making your site!” Except they all added additional headaches, security concerns, and failed to fill in edge cases, so you still need to know how to do all that HTML, CSS, and JS anyway. That’s exactly how LLM generated code works now. It’ll be useful and common for a while and then the technical debt will pile up and pile up and eventually everyone will look around and think “what the hell were we thinking” and tear it all down.
