Reviewing, it looks like the chart shown is actually a great example of a terrible graph; it uses 5 year periods then switches to 1 year periods without clear indication, making it look flatter than it would otherwise. If I adjust for this in a photo editor, emissions have barely slowed. I was misled, sorry for passing that on and thanks for questioning it.

Reminder that Cable and Broadcast TV are the same quality now, so if you (or your parents) watch TV, you can set up a box that just connects to the HDMI port and captures everything. It even gets metadata so you can see what channel the best stuff is on, like PBS kids. Total cost is around 100-200$ and after that it’s free.
I gave a friend a raspberry pi a while ago and just this last week they asked me to come and set it up with Pihole for them. They’re very happy to not have ads on their TV anymore. The only hiccup has been that their network connected cat litterbox (lol) doesn’t tell them when the cat has pooped anymore.
Yes please, let’s use this term, and reserve Open Source for it’s existing definition in the academic ML setting of weights, methods, and training data. These models don’t readily fit into existing terminology for structure and logistic reasons, but when someone says “it’s got open weights” I know exactly what set of licenses and implications it may have without further explanation.
Yes, these devices exist. But, IR is significantly, even several orders of magnitude, less powerful from the sun than visible and UV light. The only applications derive from receiving power from human sources that are bright enough, some examples are here in the other comments.
Even then, I have doubts that human IR emitters produce enough power for anything but the most highly efficiently engineered device, outside of a microwave.

Yeah, everything I’ve been hearing in the last couple of years has talked about how traditional fact checking methods do not sway beliefs. The few things I’ve heard work are innoculation and ridicule.
Inoculation (telling someone about conspiracies before they’re encountered) seems like it could be used in favor of whatever ideology, not just the truth.
And ridicule (couch sex memes and “weird”), seems to work because it specifically targets the “follow the strong man” approach that many fools take to belief building. Like that can’t be applicable generally, can it?
I am yet to learn of a solid framework + practical methods which work to guide people toward belief based in reality.
Perhaps it’s multi-faceted. First make them feel like part of a community, which grounds them in experience and removes the most insane conspiracies/fear, then they’ll be grounded enough to accept some media & scientific literacy education?
