  • The Bab el-Mandeb is a hugely important chokepoint in world trade, and moves around 30% of global oil supply through there, along with 30,000 ships per year.

    It’s closer to 15% of total global trade, which is huge and really only affects European trade. Between 1.7 to 4 million tons per day of cargo transits the strait, and it is an incredibly tight pinch point, the navigable part of the strait is only a few kilometers across. Ships are currently detouring around the horn of Africa, which adds 15 days to the journey. That’s a lot of fuel being burned.
