  • Except the grid overload thing isn’t even an issue with renewables, since wind can be shut down in a matter of 1-5 minutes (move them out of the wind) and solar literally just be disabled. Any overload they produce would be due to mechanical failure, where you can cut them off the grid since they’re in the process of destroying themselves anyway (like in those videos where wind turbines fail spectacularly). Otherwise renewables are perfect to regulate the grid if available.

In a hypothetical grid with an absolute majority of many badly adjustable power sources (like nuclear) you’d have to work with negative prices to entice building large on-demand consumers or battery solutions. So far nobody was stupid enough to build a grid like this though.

tl;dr, this whole problem indeed is about economics and therefore may very well be a “capitalism thing”. Renewables do not overload the grid.

  • Is this a joke? Even if you ignore the overly fancy stuff like those Forum-like features Matrix can hardly do the basics correctly. The encryption constantly causes issues, Voice feature is still beta, the UX is a mess, the UI is lackluster, basic features are missing (you can’t even set the Voice Activation level, wtf), there are no integrated admin tools and the third-party UIs are either wonky or lackluster, the software (both server and client) is a bloated mess that takes aeons to do anything and is awful to develop (a friend looked at it and quickly decided it’s not worth all the hassle)…

Of course there’s a difference in size, still they could’ve figured things out way better in the last decade. People ask for voice channels since 2017, and not just did they have a working Jitsi integration, there also are WebRTC frameworks ready to use they could’ve picked. And even now with that Beta feature it is more than obvious they do not want it to work as simple as Discord, but more like a professional software for meetings (that or they just really love creating convoluted UI).

There’s no way to get any majority of Discord users to use this mess. We discussed this once in our local hackerspace, and while the general opinion of course was more complex given some people know how complicated the protocol is, there also was a consensus that the software as it is is “not great to use”. And if even hackers / enthusiasts are saying this there’s no way in hell to convince casual users.

Not to mention it will not just gobble up itself now, but also all the bad code on the internet.

If you ask ChatGPT or Codestral how to safe a file in memory it will in almost all cases save those data chunks you’re reading from somewhere in a list and suggest appending every chunk to that list.

Yeah sure you can do that instead of using io.bytesIO() (probably, until weird things happen), but what the fuck. And that’s Python, literally the language those models are supposed to excel in.

  • Nothing comes close to the feature set offered by Discord, Matrix’ bad priorities unfortunately made sure of this. There currently is a project to fix their shit even if it means to break some bad decisions, Tuwunel, however it’s neither ready nor is it clear where it will end up. The previous project it forked, Conduwuit, got bullied into giving up.

You’ll probably be best off with a classic 2-way approach for now. Stick with Mumble for Voice and get something nice for Chat and Organizing like Mattermost or Revolt (or even IRC if you’re a purist). With some luck Discord’s strong enshittification will give projects like Tuwunel the necessary push it needs to force Matrix to finally care for more than just the needs of governments and their perfectionism that gets them nowhere for years now. That or we’ll see some kind of soft-fork with even more bad blood.

  • then when all the businesses that relied on those people are struggling to fill positions, the camps will start leasing their prisoners to those businesses.

You already have that, since decades, they were just euphemistically called “prisons”. Just think about how much money can be made by shareholders of those prison companies (who already cheered) by renting out their S̶l̶a̶v̶e̶s̶ criminal inmates to companies for a 2000% profit margin.

Like, seriously, Hitler or Mussolini would be deeply impressed by the US government. Not exaggerating.

  • Those who are able to fight already do so, those who’re perceptive to fascist’ propaganda are already brainwashed, and the media is broken. Meanwhile too many can’t fight because they’re already suffering too much from a broken, suppressive economy and decisions made by disconnected leaders in the decades before. It’s a fascist takeover almost by the book, and now anyone who wasn’t interested in history enough get their answer for “how could it even happen back then” first hand.

Ig I was to compare the black plague with Ebola I could also make it look like a walk in the park. Both of the countries you mention are, politically (!), a huge pile of shit.

Of course China got a high GDP-PPP as the whole world used it as cheap manufacturing plant. However PPP doesn’t indicate the quality of goods, just the amount you can buy per unit of currency. An electrical tooth brush from temu might be technically the same kind of product as one from Braun, but definitely not the same. Also the fact they use literal slaves (not just wage-slaves) in domestic production that make cheap shit completely screws up any proper comparison, especially if you dare to also compare quality of life.

Of course they build more infrastructure, they’re the country with highest population on earth. Their infrastructure however is cheap shit and already crumbles away. Also, compared to the US any rich country can do better in this regard, that’s not hard.

Of course the standard of living in metropolitan areas as of China have a higher chance of being better than in the US given the lack of centralized big box stores and walkability of the area. However the statistics China provides especially for those social things are proven to be full of shit, their suppression of poor people alone completely screws up any comparison. And don’t even start with rural areas…

So yeah, you should really stop consuming so much tankie propaganda and comparing two shit show governments.
