Uploading a video to youtube doesn’t copyright it, and most Youtube videos are second-hand content anyway.

Edit: I thought I’d be a little more helpful and provide an example. Look at all the CNN videos on this YT channel, the operators of which I’m pretty sure do not own the copyright: https://youtube.com/@american.bulletin

Just saying that if american_bulletin can rip & post CNN videos, then there’s no reason fediversians shouldn’t be able to rip and post american_bulletin’s rip of CNN to peertube.

I wish people would just download from youtube, upload to peertube, and share the peertube link as a matter of course when they want to share videos. It adds a few steps, but you’d save a lot of people from having to deal with that hellsite.

It’s not a matter of how many users, but whether those users have the option to switch servers. By the former standard, mastodon would be considered centralized simply because of mastodon.social.
